29 CFR 1910.1000(c): Employees were exposed to crystalline silica (quartz) and
respirable dust, listed in Table Z-3, in excess of the 8-hour Time-Weighted
Average concentrations listed for those materials:
a) On June 21, 1996, a sandblaster working in the shed was exposed to respirable dust
containing 41.6% crystalline silica (quartz) at a Time-Weighted Average level
of 34.983 mg/m³, which is approximately 153 times the
Permissible Exposure Limit for crystalline silica of 0.229 mg/m³
and approximately 7 times the Permissible Exposure Limit for respirable dust of 5 mg/m³.
The exposure level is derived from two samples collected over a 444-minute
period; the calculations include a zero value for the 36 minutes not sampled.
b) On June 21, 1996, a sandblaster working in the shed was exposed to respirable dust
containing 44.0% crystalline silica (quartz) at a Time-Weighted Average level
of 10.073 mg/m³, which is approximately 46 times the Permissible
Exposure Limit for crystalline silica of 0.217 mg/m³ and
approximately 2 times the Permissible Exposure Limit for respirable dust of 5 mg/m³.
The exposure level is derived from two samples collected over a 427-minute
period; the calculations include a zero value for the 53 minutes not sampled.
c) On June 21, 1996, a sandblaster working in the booth was exposed to respirable dust
containing 50.7% crystalline silica (quartz) at a Time-Weighted Average level
of 28.602 mg/m³, which is approximately 151 times the
Permissible Exposure Limit for crystalline silica of 0.190 mg/m³
and approximately 5.7 times the Permissible Exposure Limit for respirable dust of 5 mg/m³.
The exposure level is derived from two samples collected over a 478-minute
period; the calculations include a zero value for the 2 minutes not sampled.
d) On June 21, 1996, a sandblast assistant working in the vicinity of the shed was
exposed to respirable dust containing 46.7% crystalline silica (quartz) at a Time-Weighted
Average level of 2.042 mg/m³, which is approximately 10 times
the Permissible Exposure Limit for crystalline silica of 0.205 mg/m³.
The exposure level is derived from two samples collected over a 458-minute
period; the calculations include a zero value for the 22 minutes not sampled.
e) On June 21, 1996, a sandblaster working in the shed in the morning and patching
asphalt paths in the afternoon was exposed to respirable dust containing 27.0% crystalline
silica (quartz) at a Time-Weighted Average level of 1.033 mg/m³,
which is approximately 3 times the Permissible Exposure Limit for crystalline silica of
0.345 mg/m³. The exposure level is derived from two samples
collected over a 461-minute period; the calculations include a zero value for
the 19 minutes not sampled.
