CLEVELAND -- Reducing hazards and enhancing safety and health in construction throughout northeast Ohio are the goals of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Construction Safety Council of Northeast Ohio.
"This alliance seeks to reach employees and employers at all levels in the area's construction industry and provide them with the knowledge and ability to anticipate, identify and eliminate work-related hazards," said Rob Medlock, OSHA's area director in Cleveland.
The alliance partners will work together to develop delivery systems for safety and health information within the industry, addressing key issues in construction and encouraging the use of voluntary compliance programs among the council's 110 member businesses.
The council is a nonprofit organization whose members employ some 5,000 construction workers in northeast Ohio. Meetings are held regularly to share information on a variety of topics, including the discussion of best practices.
OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 468 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
