    Overview

    The OSHA and ASA Alliance focuses on using the organizations' collective expertise to help protect employees' health and safety, particularly in addressing hazards associated with material handling, forklift operations, and hazard communication issues.

    Toolbox Talks

    Through the Alliance, ASA has begun the development of a series of 12 toolbox talks for the supply industry. Three of the talks have been reviewed by the Agency and are posted on the ASA Safety Resources Web page and linked to from the OSHA and ASA Alliance Web page on the OSHA Web site. The toolbox talks include:

    ASA created and maintains an ASA and OSHA Alliance Web page on the ASA Web site. The Web page includes information about the OSHA and ASA Alliance and links to OSHA's Web site, On-site Consultation Program Fact Sheet, Alliance-developed resources, and other safety and health information.

    OSHA created and maintains an OSHA and ASA Alliance Web page that is posted on the OSHA Web site. The page includes the OSHA and ASA Alliance agreement news releases, photos, activities and events, as well as links to resources developed by ASA through the Alliance Program.

    Through the Alliance, the following ASA member, Mike Adelizzi is serving on the editorial board for OSHA's Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) Safety and Health Topics page.

    Event

    Loading Dock & Door Safety & Energy Webinar, August 25, 2009

    On August 25, 2009, ASA sponsored a webinar describing safety issues associated with the loading dock areas and possible solutions. Topics covered included danger zones, trailer drops, whole body vibration, and fires at the loading dock. This webinar was presented to Alliance Program participants, as well as OSHA, State Plan and On-site Consultation representatives nationwide. A total of 22 agency personnel attended the Webinar. The Webinar can be replayed and presentation slides can be downloaded by clicking on the hyperlink provided on the OSHA and ASA Alliance Web page.

    Event

    2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, May 3-9, 2009, Washington, DC.

    On May 4, 2009, Acting Assistant Secretary Jordan Barab, USDOL-OSHA spoke to OSHA staff, Alliance Program participants and other safety and health professionals during the 2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for the 2009 NAOSH Week was "Safety Means Always Coming Home." In addition, the event featured an Alliance Program participant panel with presentations from Alliance Program Participants American Heart Association, ASSE, Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc., and National Safety Council focusing on workplace safety and health issues.

      • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and ASA's Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.

      • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding ASA's best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by ASA and through OSHA- or ASA-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, webinars, publications and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
      • Promote and encourage ASA members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs, and the On-site Consultation Program and its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.
      • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects on hazards that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
      • Develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the business value of safety and health and publicize their results.
      • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings to provide input on safety and health issues or to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace.
    2. Executive Summary

      During the first year of their Alliance, OSHA and ASA worked together to address safety and health related issues addressing exposure to hazards associated with material handling and forklift operations and hazard communication issues.

      For example, OSHA created and maintains an OSHA and ASA Alliance Web page that is posted on the OSHA Web site. The page includes the OSHA and ASA Alliance agreement news releases, photos, activities and events, as well as links to resources developed by ASA through the Alliance Program.

      Moreover, ASA created and maintains an ASA and OSHA Alliance Web page on the ASA Web site. The Web page includes information about the OSHA and ASA Alliance and links to OSHA's Web site, Alliance-developed resources, and other safety and health information. In addition, ASA developed a Safety Resources Web page on the site that includes:

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    During the upcoming year, ASA will continue to work through the Alliance to develop compliance assistance tools and resources. For example, the Alliance will:

    • Continue to update information on the OSHA and ASA Alliance Web page and the ASA and OSHA Alliance related Web pages;
    • Continue developing Safety Articles;
    • Continue developing Toolbox Talks;
    • OSHA staff we speak at and exhibit at the Network ASA2009 Conference on October 16, 2009 in Washington, DC;
    • Help support the DOL's Working Partners Program "Drug-Free Work Week 2009 October 19-25, 2009";
    • Present the Safety Webinar "Ergonomics & Back Safety in Lifting and Moving Products, December 10, 2009";
    • Help support 2010 North American Occupational Safety and Health Week May 2-8, 2010; and
    • ASA member Mike Adelizzi will continue to serve as a member of the editorial board for OSHA's Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) Safety and Health Topics page and will provide feedback as appropriate. In addition, ASA will solicit other members to serve on the editorial boards for several of the 120 OSHA eTools and Safety and Health Topics pages.
