    Overview

    Through the Alliance, OSHA, NCC, and NTF are providing members of NCC and NTF and the public with information, guidance, and access to training resources, in English and in other languages, regarding protecting the safety and health of printing industry's employees. The Alliance addresses sharing best practices for and technical knowledge of insuring employees' safety and health, including, in particular, methods of reducing and preventing exposure to ergonomic hazards associated with poultry processing.

    1. Events and Products

      Training and Education Goal

      • To work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing training and education programs for the poultry industry on ergonomic techniques, program structures, and applications in the poultry industry, as well as in communicating these programs to employers and employees in the industry. Specifically, NCC and NTF will hold ergonomics training sessions at the annual National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry.

        During this reporting period, OSHA and NCC and NTF did not initiate projects to address this goal.

      Outreach and Communication Goals

      • Develop and disseminate information and guidance in English, Spanish, and other languages through print and electronic media, including electronic assistance tools and links from Web sites of OSHA, NCC and NTF.

      OSHA continued to maintain the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site. The Web page features links to the Alliance agreement and related documents, information on activities and events, and milestones and successes of the Alliance.       Tyson Foods Intranet

      Tyson Foods added information about the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance on the company's intranet. In addition, Tyson posted the following DOL-developed articles:

      The following representatives from the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance serve on the editorial board of OSHA's Poultry Processing Industry eTool: Chris J. Henderson, Manager - Safety, Environment and Security, Jennie-O Turkey Store, Willmar, MN; Don Robinson, Corporate Ergonomist, Atlanta, GA; and Craig Wyvill, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA.

      • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's, NCC's, or NTF's conferences, local meetings, or other events, such as the annual National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry, the annual International Poultry Exposition, and regular meetings of the Joint Poultry Industry Safety and Health Committee.

        June 1, 2006: National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry, Chattanooga, Tennessee

        On June 1, 2006, at the National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Chris J. Henderson (NCC and NTF, Manager - Safety, Environment and Security, Jennie-O Turkey Store, Willmar, Minnesota) gave a presentation about the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance and the Alliance Program.

        • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding the best practices or effective approaches of NCC and NTF and publicize the results through outreach by NCC and NTF and through OSHA-, NCC- or NTF-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).

        November 1, 2006: NCC and NTF Safety and Health Committee Meeting, Atlanta, Georgia

        On November 1, 2006, at the NCC and NTF Safety and Health Committee Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Jonathan Worrell (Compliance Assistant Specialist from OSHA's Region IV, Atlanta, Georgia, East Area Office) spoke regarding OSHA's Hexavalent Chromium Standard.

        • Promote and encourage NCC and NTF members' or worksites' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, and the Consultation Program and its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

          During this reporting period, OSHA and NCC/NTF did not initiate projects to address this goal.
           
        • Encourage NCC's and NTF's members to build relationships with OSHA's Regional and Area Offices to address health and safety issues, including ergonomics hazards in the poultry industry.

        Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health Goals

        • Develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the business value of safety and health and publicize the results of the studies.

        Products

        Success Story: Success with Ergonomics - Gold Kist, Inc.

        The OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance updated the musckoskeletal disorders claims date in the success story, "Success with Ergonomics - Gold Kist, Inc." on OSHA's Web. The success story describes how Gold Kist established and implemented an ergonomics program at its 11 poultry processing plants.

        Success Story: Success with Ergonomics - Tyson Foods of Monett

        The OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance updated the Tyson Foods of Monett's success story on OSHA's Web site with information about how the company has enhanced its existing ergonomics program. Specifically, Tyson Foods implemented an on-site medical management program, which involved employing an on-site physical therapist to develop an intimate knowledge of the workplace environment.

        • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on ergonomic issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace.

          During this reporting period, OSHA, NCC, and NTF did not work on projects to address this goal.
    2. Executive Summary

      During the 2006-2007 evaluation period, OSHA, NCC, and NTF are provided members of NCC and NTF and the public with information, guidance, and access to training resources regarding protecting the safety and health of their employees. Several of these resources for the poultry industry were developed or updated through the Alliance Program by OSHA, NCC, and NTF. For example, the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance Web page on OSHA's Web site provides links to the Alliance agreement, related documents, and activities and events. In addition, two representatives from the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance serve on the editorial board of OSHA's Poultry Processing Safety and Health Topics page. Moreover, three representatives from the OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance serve on the editorial board of OSHA's Poultry Processing eTool.

      OSHA, NCC, and NTF representatives also promoted the Alliance through speeches and presentations. For example, Jonathan Worrell, Compliance Assistant Specialist, Region IV, Atlanta, Georgia East Area Office, USDOL-OSHA gave a presentation on OSHA's Hexavalent Chromium at NCC's and NTF's Safety and Health Committee Meeting, November 1, 2006, in Atlanta, Georgia to audience of 100 people.

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    The OSHA and NCC/NTF Alliance implementation team will be discussing a number of issues regarding the future of the Alliance agreement, including concluding the agreement and signing new Alliance focusing on different safety and health areas that impact the poultry processing industry, e.g. machine guarding and lockout/tagout. If the group agrees to change the Alliance's focus, the agreement will be concluded retroactively, as of January 6, 2007.
