    4. Overview

      The OSHA and SAIA Alliance focuses on providing SAIA's members and others in the construction industry, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will continue to address the health and safety of workers, particularly by reducing and preventing fall and caught-in-between hazards and by addressing issues related to frame scaffold, mast climbing scaffold, suspended scaffold, and aerial lift equipment.

      Through the Alliance, the organizations will use relevant injury and illness data in their industry to help identify areas of emphasis for Alliance awareness, outreach, and communication activities. The Alliance will also explore and implement selected options to evaluate the effectiveness of the Alliance and measure the impact of its overall effort on improving workplace safety for employers and workers.

    OSHA's 2014 National Outreach Campaign Focusing on the Prevention of Falls in Construction

    SAIA's support included:

    • Published an article entitled "Fall Protection Innovations Take on Worker Fatigue" in the January/February 2014 issue of Scaffold & Access Industry Magazine.
    • Hosted a Fall Prevention Stand-down on July 29, 2014, in Austin, Texas, during their 2014 SAIA Conference. OSHA Staff from Region VI participated in the event.
    • Provided a slider page on their homepage with a direct link to OSHA's outreach initiatives on the National Safety Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction.
    • Submitted an email blast May 28, 2014, announcing their support of OSHA's National Safety Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction. The email blast contained a video of Thomas E. Perez, Secretary of Labor and a link to OSHA's webpage on the stop falls step-down campaign.
    • Published an article in the April 2014 issue of the SA Connection entitled "SAIA Supports OSHA's Stand-down Week" announcing support for the National Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction week.
    • Published three articles entitled "All Good Things," "Stand Down, Don't Fall," and "OSHA Talks" in the May/June 2014 issue of Scaffold & Access Industry Magazine. All three articles focus on OSHA's fall prevention in construction initiative.
    • Published an article in the June 2014 issue of the SA Connection entitled "Austin's Safety Stand Down Day Slated for July 29."  The blurb contained the OSHA video of Secretary Perez on the National Safety Stand-Down for Prevention of Falls in Construction.
    • Published an article entitled "Falls Costs, Safety Always Pays" in the July/August 2014 issue of Scaffold & Access Industry Magazine. The article focuses on OSHA's fall prevention in construction initiative and highlights the need for training temporary workers on fall prevention.
    • Hosted a Safety Stand-down for Fall Prevention in Houston, Texas, on October 17, 2014.

    February 20, 2015: SAIA Email Blast

    SAIA submitted an email blast entitled "Settlement Resolving Legal Challenges to Final Rule Revising 29 CFR 1910.269 and 29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart V."  The email blast discusses the general industry and construction standards for electric power generation, transmission and distribution installations.

    Renew the OSHA and SAIA Alliance Agreement

    • The Alliance renewed the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance agreement on December18, 2013.
    • SAIA published an article entitled "Aligned for Success" in the March/April 2014 issue of the Scaffold & Access Industry Magazine. The article discussed their Alliance renewal and goals for the Alliance.

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    In the upcoming year, OSHA and SAIA plan to undertake several additional projects through the Alliance to provide information, guidance and access to training resources on safety and health issues in the construction industry. For example, SAIA will complete and publish the AWP Checklists/Tip Sheets focusing on Safety Devices, Risk Assessment, and Selection of Proper Equipment. Through the Alliance, SIA will update the proposals for the Best Practices Seminars on both MCWPs and AWPs and develop a video of the seminars for distribution to OSHA staff. SAIA will also develop evaluation methods to determine the effectiveness of their training programs and Alliance-developed products and submit the results to OSHA.

    In addition, SAIA members will attend meetings of the APCR, when scheduled and contribute to the development of products through the roundtable. For completing their outreach goals, SAIA will provide OSHA with an Alliance exhibit at their 2015 Annual Convention and at the 2015 Committee Week Conference.
