      The OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance provides SWR Institute members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect the health and safety of workers. Through the Alliance, the organizations will continue to address fall, motor vehicle, and hazard communication hazards and issues related to small businesses.

    Raising Awareness of OSHA's Rulemaking and Enforcement Initiatives Goal 1: To convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on fall, caught-in-between, and other scaffolding related hazards to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

    OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable Meeting, Department of Labor, March 28, 2013,  Washington, DC

    Representatives from the SWR Institute Alliance participated in the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable meeting in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Alliance Program participants discussed products developed through the Roundtable, including the Construction Workplace Design Solutions, and identified potential projects and compliance assistance resources to help address safety and health hazards in the construction industry.

    During the reporting period, the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance Implementation Team have not completed work on programs or projects to address this goal.

     

     

     

    Outreach and Communication Goal 1: To develop information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to develop ways of communicating such information (e.g., print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools, and OSHA's and the SWR Institute's Web sites) to employers and workers in the industry.

    SWR Institute and OSHA Alliance Web Page

    SWR Institute maintains an OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance Web page on its Website with information on the Alliance agreement and links to OSHA's electronic assistance tools.  In addition, the page features links to products developed by SWR Institute through the Alliance Program, including the SWR Institute Safety and Health Manual, the SWR Institute Safety and Health Field Manual in both English and Spanish, and the Guidance Document for Multi-component Chemical Products in Construction.  SWR Institute also includes links to resources developed through the APCR, such as the Fall Hazard Awareness Course, Fall Protection Slide Presentation, and Ladder Safety Toolbox Talks. 

    In addition, SWR Institute developed a survey to evaluate the benefits of their Alliance developed products.  The survey was posted on the toolbox web page in January 2014.

    OSHA maintains the OSHA and SWR Institute Alliance Web page that is posted on the OSHA Website.  The page includes the Alliance agreement, renewal agreements, annual reports, news releases, information on activities and events, milestones and successes of the alliance, and links to resources developed by SWR Institute through the Alliance Program.

    SWR Institute's Support for OSHA's 2013 National Outreach Campaign Focusing on the Heat Illness Prevention, The theme was "Water. Rest. Shade."

    2013 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, May 5-11, 2013

    The SWR Institute Alliance and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2013 NAOSH Week.  Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. 2013 theme: "Worker Safety Works for Everyone."

    To help support the event, SWR Institute Published an article on the event in the April edition of the MemberBriefs.

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    In the upcoming year, OSHA and SWR Institute plan to undertake several additional projects through the Alliance to provide information, guidance and access to training resources on safety and health issues for small businesses. For example, SWR Institute will renew the Alliance and complete the toolbox talks focusing on Lockout/Tagout, drinking water, housekeeping, and illumination.  SWR Institute will complete revisions to the Safety and Health Field Manual.  In addition, SWR Institute will translate the toolbox talks on electrical safety, personal protective equipment, power tools, respiratory protection, powder actuated tools, first aid, fire extinguisher safetycompetent person, and portable generator safety into Spanish.

    Through the Alliance, SWR Institute will also develop evaluation methods to determine the effectiveness of their Alliance-developed products and submit their results to OSHA.

    SWR Institute will continue to participate in the Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, when scheduled, and contribute to the development of Construction Workplace Design Solutions.  For completing their outreach goals, SWR Institute will provide OSHA with an Alliance exhibit at their Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 Meetings.

    Finally, SWR Institute representatives will be joining with other Alliance Program participants to support the 2014 North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH), May 4-10, 2014, "Workplace Safety Works for Everyone."
