    3. Overview
      The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Atlanta West Area Office, Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and Mental Health America of Georgia (MHA-GA). The focus of this Alliance is to provide GAMH members and the public with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect workers by reducing and preventing exposure to mental health hazards and/or addressing work-related suicide and drug overdose issues in all industries.

    • In addition to these formal meetings, the Alliance coordinators from each organization maintained regular contact throughout the reporting period to monitor the Alliance’s progress and results.

    Dissemination: Alliance Program participant shared information on OSHA-developed or OSHA Alliance Program-developed tools and resources, OSHA standards/rulemakings, enforcement, or outreach campaigns.

During this period, the Alliance group promoted a Mental Health Safety Stand-Down for the month of May, in support of Mental Health Awareness Month. The event was promoted using email blast and the issuance of a news release.

During this period, a member of the Alliance group promoted the Georgia Mental Health during the OSHA Region IV, Field Federal Safety and Health Council (FFSHC) annual FFSHC Forum. This annual event includes representative from all the OTI Education Centers in Region IV, all the OSHA Area Offices, as well as the nine (9) FFSHCs.

During this period, a member of the Alliance group promoted OSHA’s new fact sheets on Workplace Mental Health, which are available in English and Spanish. The fact sheet provides workplaces with vital information and resources to address mental health concerns effectively and will be incorporated into the Introduction to OSHA module of the OSHA 10- and 30-Hour Outreach Training courses.

Member of the Georgia Mental Health Alliance

Kimberly Erukunuakpor, PhD, MPH (Epidemiologist, GA DPH) presented the results from her analysis “Comparison of Drug Overdose Death Rates Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic by Major Occupation Groups, Georgia, 2019-2020.” Her analysis identifies occupation groups in Georgia with high increases in drug overdose deaths. Construction workers had the highest drug overdose death rate during both 2019 and 2020. Workers in Healthcare Support; Farming, Forestry, and Fishing; and Food Preparation and Serving Related occupations had the highest percent increases in drug overdoses during the pandemic.
