    Overview:

    OSHA, GLS-AIHA, GA-ASSE, CEFGA, GA DOE and Georgia Tech hereby form an Alliance to provide career/technical education teachers, students and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help protect career/technical education students’ health and safety in the construction and general industries.

    Implementation Team Memberships and Contributors

    The implementation team members included representatives from OSHA, GLS-AIHA, GA-ASSE, CEFGA, GA DOE and Georgia Tech. The Implementation Team Contributors included representatives from the US DOL – Wage and Hour Division (WHD) and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

    Events
     
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to Construction Career Technology students at Maxwell High School, August 18 – 22, 2008.
       
    • An overview of OSHA’s rights and responsibilities for employees was provided to students at Lee County High Schools, August 21, 2008.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour General Industry safety and health training was provided the member of the Kell High School, FIRST Robotics Team, December 6 and 13, 2007.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour General Industry safety and health training was provided the member of the Walton High School, FIRST Robotics Team, December 6 and 13, 2007.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to students in the Atlanta YouthBuild – Atlanta Workforces Development, December 2 and 13, 2008.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to students in the Atlanta YouthBuild – Atlanta Workforces Development, December 9 and 10, 2008.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to Construction Career Technology students at DeKalb North – High School of Technology in January 26 – February 3, 2009.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to students in the Atlanta YouthBuild – Atlanta Workforces Development, January 26 – February 3, 2009.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to Construction Career Technology students in Cass High School, February 11 and 12, 2009.
       
    • Conducted an OSHA construction overview training course for Georgia-Tech Construction Management Class, February 11, 2009.
       
    • OSHA 10-hour training was provided to Automotive Repair Career Technology students at Maxwell High School, March 9, 12 & 16, 2009.

    Outreach and Communication

    Events
     
    • On August 15, 2008, a members of the Alliance group conducted OSHA Overview Training at the College of Coastal Georgia.
       
    • January 31, 2009, members of the Georgia Youth Alliance participated in the Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) Conference in Newnan, GA.
       
    • April 16 – 17, 2009, the group participated in the Construction CareerExpo at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Expo is also conducted in conjunction with the Skills USA competitions. A booth was staffed at the event with representatives from OSHA, Georgia Tech Onsite Consultation Program and the US DOL – WHD.
       
      • Total conference participants 6,145 including 265 student competitors, 4,510 students, 770 education representatives (administrators, teaches and counselors), as well as 865 company volunteers, exhibitors and guest.
         
      • The event was supported by 191 schools and 243 companies.
    • On April 16 – 17, 2009, a booth was also staffed by the AIHA-Georgia Local Section (GLS), focused on preventing noise-induced hearing loss (of teen workers) in the construction industry by raising the awareness of workers.

    Products
     
    • The “Child Labor Law Exemptions for Student Learners and Apprentices” developed by the group (in FY 2008) was shared with the National Construction Career Days Center (NCCDC).
       
    • The group’s efforts were promoted in an OSHA news release issued on April 15, 2009. The full news release can be viewed at the following site - U.S. Labor Department's OSHA to kick off youth job safety campaign April 16 at CEFGA CareerExpo in College Park, Ga.
       
    • An article about the Georgia Youth Alliance and the CEFGA Career Expo appeared in the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) E-News on Monday, April 20, 2009.
    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events
     
    • Several members of the Alliance group attended a formal workshop and received training to deliver the Youth @ Work course. The Youth @ Work curriculum is targeted at small business employers and it is focused on keeping young workers safe and healthful. Approximately 18 states currently participate in this training program and have implemented the Youth @ Work curriculum into their school and community.
       
    • March 23-27, 2009, 16 construction career technology instructors completed the OSHA 500 Outreach Trainer course, at the training facility of Dublin Construction, in Dublin, GA. This effort was supported by the Georgia Youth Alliance, the Career Technical and Agricultural Education Resource Network (CTAERN) and several other CEFGA industry partners. Once trained, these teachers will be able to provide industry-recognized safety training and an OSHA 10-hour safety cards to high school students across the State. This first round of training represents an opportunity to reach about 1,500 students annually.
       
    • The Georgia Tech Onsite Consultation Program’s efforts in the area of Youth Outreach were recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s, Office of Small Businesses and Consultation, with an OSCAR Award for 2009.
       
    • The Alliance was promoted at several Workforce Development Taskforce meetings. These meetings address the needs for vocational instruction and training. These meetings were conducted throughout Georgia on the following dates:
       
      • AGC/CEFGA Southwest Georgia Workforce Alliance Meeting, September 16, 2008.
      • Central Georgia Workforce Development Taskforce Meeting, September 18, 2008.
      • Central Georgia Workforce Development Taskforce Meeting, November 4, 2008.
      • Central Georgia Workforce Development Taskforce Meeting, January 13, 2009.
      • AGC/CEFGA Southwest Georgia Workforce Alliance Meeting, March 12, 2009, conducted in Albany, GA.

    • Continue to provide OSHA 10-hour training for Construction Career Technology students at High Schools and YouthBuild Programs throughout Georgia.
       
    • Continue to provide OSHA 10-hour training for Career Technology students at High Schools throughout Georgia, pursuing careers in general industry.
       
    • Continue to participate in School Career Day Programs throughout Georgia, to promote careers in workplace safety and health.
       
    • Continue to participate in the Construction CareerExpo led by the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA). This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations, hands-on activities and the Skills USA competitions.
