    Overview:

    The US Department of Labor - Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the US Department of Labor - Wage and Hour Division (WHD), the Georgia Local Section - American Industrial Hygiene Association (GLS-AIHA), the Georgia Chapter - American Society of Safety Engineers (GA-ASSE), the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA), the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE), Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC, HDS Consulting, RockTenn Company, and the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (GTRI) formed an Alliance focused on providing career/technical educators, students and others with information, guidance and training resources to protect the safety and health of career/technical students.

  2. Implementation Team Memberships and Contributors

    The implementation team included representatives from all of the Alliance participants, as well as the US DOL – Wage and Hour Division (WHD). Implementation team meetings were conducted as scheduled on the following dates: 8/28/2013; 11/21/2013; 1/23/2014; 2/26/2014; 4/15/2014; and 6/9/2014.

    Training and Education

    Events

    • On September 3, 2013, members of the Alliance group conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for students at Osborne High School in Cobb County, GA.
    • On October 10 and 11, 2013, members of the Alliance group conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for students at Cass High School in Bartow County, GA.
    • On October 18, 2013, the CEFGA conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for career technology instructors.
    • On November 2, 2013, members of the Alliance group, through the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted two young worker safety and health training sessions for students participating in robotics at Kell High School in Cobb County.   
    • On November 9, 2013, members of the Alliance group, through the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted two young worker safety and health training sessions for students participating in robotics at the Fernbank Science in DeKalb County, GA.   
    • On November 12 and 13, 2013, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for career technology students at Cross Keys High School in DeKalb County, Georgia. 
    • December 5 through 13, 2013, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for career technology students enrolled at Maxwell High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
    • On December 5-6, 2013, members of the Alliance group conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for students at Cass High School in Bartow County, GA.
    • On December 7 and 14, 2013, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for career technology students at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia. 
    • On March 3 and 4, 2014, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted a safety and health training course for students enrolled in the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) Youthbuild Program.
    • March 26 through 27, 2014, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted six safety and health training course for students in the healthcare program at DM Terrell High School in Atlanta, GA.
    • On April 3, 2014, members of the Alliance group, led by the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted a safety and health training course for students enrolled in the Atlanta Development YouthBuild Program.
    • April 14 through 16, 2014, members of the Alliance group conducted an OSHA 10-hour general industry safety and health training course for students enrolled in the Atlanta Development YouthBuild Program.
    • May 12 through 14, 2014, members of the Alliance group conducted an OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training course for students enrolled in the Lantern Project in Clarkston, Georgia.
    • Members of the Alliance group, through the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI, conducted several young worker safety and health training sessions for students enrolled in the MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl in Construction) summer camp at the following locations:
      • On June 2 through 6, 2014, in Macon, Georgia
      • On June 16 through 20, 2014, in Bartow County, Georgia
      • On July 7, 2014, in Waynesboro, Georgia
      • On July 28, 2014, in Gwinnett County, Georgia

    Outreach and Communication

    Events

    • During this period, members of the Georgia Youth Alliance also participated in the following outreach events:
      • On September 25, 2013, the Alliance supported the Open House at Benjamin E. Mays High School.  
      • On October 21, 2013, workplace Safety and health rights were explained students at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
      • On November 2, 2013, workplace Safety and health rights were explained to home school students with the Lilburn Academic Classes (LAC).
    • On March 21 - 22, 2013, the Alliance group supported the CEFGA CareerExpo at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations and hands-on activities.  The Expo was conducted in conjunction with the Georgia SkillsUSA competitions.  The goal of this event was to raise awareness of careers in construction, engineering, architecture, transportation, and energy.  The event represented a cooperative effort by private companies, trade associations, universities, and government agencies.
      • Total conference participation was 7,212, which included 5,111 students, 1,138 company volunteers, as well as 963 teacher and school administrators.  
      • Exhibit booths were staffed by OSHA, Georgia Tech Onsite Consultation Program, AIHA, ASSE and the US DOL – WHD, as well as Brasfield & Gorrie and Georgia Institute of Technology. Students were also provided with a down-load of the OSHA Heat Stress App.  The GA-ASSE Chapter provided participants with gloves and hearing protection and discussed the importance of personal protective equipment.

  5. Upcoming Milestones for 2014 - 2015

    • During this period, the group will renew the Alliance and expand the group’s membership.
    • Provide safety and health training to members of the Kell High School robotics team, as well other robotics team students in the metro area. 
    • Participate in the Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) Conference in January 2015.
    • Participate in the Construction CareerExpo led by the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) scheduled for March 26 - 27, 2015.  This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations, hands-on activities and the Skills USA competitions.
    • Participate in the Georgia Career & Technical Education (GACTE) Conference in July 2015.
