    Overview:

    The US Department of Labor - Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the US Department of Labor - Wage and Hour Division (WHD), the Georgia Local Section - American Industrial Hygiene Association (GLS-AIHA), the Georgia Chapter - American Society of Safety Engineers (GA-ASSE), Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC, HDS Consulting, RockTenn Company, the Georgia Tech Research Institute's Occupational Safety and Health Division (GTRI), and the GTRI – Center for Young Worker Safety and Health formed an Alliance focused on providing career/technical educators, students and others with information, guidance and training resources to protect the safety and health of career/technical students.

  2. Implementation Team Memberships and Contributors

    The implementation team included representatives from all of the Alliance participants. Additionally, both the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) and the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE) contributed to the Alliance as stakeholders. Implementation team meetings were conducted as scheduled on the following dates: 8/13/14; 9/23/14; 11/12/14; 1/7/15; 2/18/15; 5/29/15; and 7/24/15.

  3. Events and Products

    Training and Education

    Events

    • On September 13, 2014, the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI conducted two young worker safety and health training sessions for members of the Barrow County 4-H Robotics team. A total of seven students were trained.
    • During this period, members of the Alliance group conducted safety and health training course for students at Maxwell High School, in Gwinnett County, Georgia. A total of 310 students were trained, during the following training courses:
      • On September 10 through 12, 2014, the Center for Young Worker Safety and Health at GTRI conducted Module 4 training for students.
      • On December 8 through 12, 2014, the Alliance group conducted OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health training for students.

    Outreach and Communication

    Events

    • On May 29 and July 24, 2015, the members of the Alliance group, led by GTRI, participated in the Sustainable Workforce Symposium I & II. The Sustainable Workforce Symposiums focused on the importance of providing effective safety and health training to young workers, as well as other topics. In addition to Alliance group members, participants in the events included the following:
      • Associated General Contractors of Georgia, Inc., (AGC)
      • GoBuild Georgia Foundation - Georgia Department of Economic Development's Workforce Division (WFD)
      • The Great promise Partnership (GPP)
      • E-Steam (Esteem Science Technology Engineering Art and Math)
      • Allnex
      • ACE Mentorship
      • Georgia Society of Professional Engineers
      • National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC)
    • On March 26 - 27, 2015, the Alliance group supported the CEFGA CareerExpo at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Expo was conducted in conjunction with the Georgia SkillsUSA competitions. The goal of this event was to raise awareness of careers in construction, engineering, architecture, transportation, and energy. The event represented a cooperative effort by private companies, trade associations, universities, and government agencies.
    • During this period, members of the Georgia Youth Alliance also participated in the following outreach events:
      • On October 6, 2014, workplace safety and health rights were explained to students attending the Metro Homeschooling Courses in Atlanta, Georgia. A total of 23 students attended this event.
      • On October 17, 2014, a member of the Alliance group conducted a presentation on workplace safety and health and participated in an exhibition at the Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia. A total of 300 students attended this event.
      • On November 19, 2014, a member of the Alliance group conducted a presentation on workplace safety and health and participated in an exhibition at Jackson High School in Jackson, Georgia. A total of 900 students attended this event.
      • On April 2, 2015, a member of the Alliance group participated in Career Day 2015 at Redan High School. A total of 100 students received OSHA outreach during the event.
    • On March 26 - 27, 2015, the Alliance group supported the CEFGA CareerExpo at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC).       • Total conference attendance was 7,212, which included 5,111 students, 1,138 company volunteers, as well as 963 teacher and school administrators.
      • Safety and health exhibit booths were staffed by OSHA, Georgia Tech Onsite Consultation Program, AIHA, ASSE and the US DOL – WHD, as well as Brasfield & Gorrie. Students were also provided with a down-load of the OSHA Heat Stress App. The GA-ASSE Chapter provided participants with protective gloves, hearing protection and they discussed the importance of personal protective equipment.

    Products

    • During this period, the Alliance group, led by representatives from RockTenn Company, developed a general industry safety and health handbook for Youth and Temp Workers.

  5. Upcoming Milestones for 2015 - 2016
    • During this period, the Georgia Youth Alliance will be re-launched with an expanded membership including the following:
      • Associated General Contractors of Georgia, Inc. (AGC Georgia)
      • Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE)
      • Georgia Department of Economic Development's Workforce Division (WFD)
    • During the period, the Alliance group will print and distribute the general industry safety and health handbook developed for Youth and Temp Workers.
    • Continue to promote the web-based safety and health training developed by Georgia Tech to FIRST robotics participants throughout Georgia.
    • Participate in the Trade and Industrial Educators of Georgia (TIEGA) Conference in January 2016.
    • Participate in the Construction CareerExpo led by the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) scheduled for March 2016. This event includes exhibitors, demonstrations, hands-on activities and the Skills USA competitions.
    • Participate in the Georgia Career & Technical Education (GACTE) Conference in July 2016.
