    Alliance Overview

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the United Safety Council, Inc. (USC) agreed to establish an Alliance to reduce and prevent employee exposure to workplace hazards associated with disasters by developing and sharing information, guidance, and training resources on emergency preparedness and effective response.

    Implementation Team Members

    The implementation Team consists of representatives from the OSHA Area Office in Tampa, FL, and the United Safety Council, Inc. (USC).

    Training and Education


    Events
     
    • During this period the USC conducted a total of fifty-nine classes addressing occupational safety and health issues cover by the Alliance, such as, workplace violence, emergency preparedness, CPR, first aid, AED and safety management systems.
       
    • The USC also facilitated nine OTI safety and health training courses, which were conducted by the University of South Florida.

    Outreach and Communication

    Events
     
    • On August 8, 2008, the University of Florida coordinated with the USC Alliance to host a “Worker Safety Training for Hurricane Preparation and Reconstruction” at the USC,
       
    • On August 26, 2008, a second University of Florida “Worker Safety Training for Hurricane Preparation and Reconstruction” was held at the USC.
       
    • On February 25, 2009, the USC held the first of a two part series on Workplace Violence. The presentation gave general information on what exactly is workplace violence and general prevention guidance. Participants were provided with the NIOSH DVD “Violence on the Job.”
       
    • March 20, 2009, the USC hosted a four hour training on “Mishap Prevention and Investigations.” The training covered tools and techniques used to perform a comprehensive accident investigation.
       
    • April 10, 2009, conducted the second part of the Workplace Violence two part series. Participants were provided with OSHA publication “Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Health Care and Social Service Workers”, NIOSH DVDs “Violence on the Job” and “Working with Stress” and sample prevention plans from various state OSHA programs.
       
    • The USC Alliance was promoted during several OSHA outreach presentations conducted throughout Central Florida. The Alliance also assisted in the distribution of safety & health outreach material such as the Region IV Photo and Struck-by CDs, Tool Box Reviews, MAD IV Roofing and Carpentry Toolbox Reviews and OSHA Quick Cards.

    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events
     
    • On June 10, 2008, the Alliance was promoted during a presentation to the Professional Association of Health Care Management in Springhill, FL.
       
    • On June 19-21, 2008, the Alliance and “Worker Safety Training for Hurricane Preparation and Reconstruction” program was promoted during the statewide Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Conference.
       
    • July 31-August 2, 2008, the Alliance and “Worker Safety Training for Hurricane Preparation and Reconstruction” program was promoted during the regional Southeast Building Conference.
       
    • On January 16, 2009, the Alliance was promoted during the USC Safety Awards in Orlando, FL where representatives from national and international companies attended.
       
    • February 17-19, 2009, the Alliance was promoted during the national Common Ground Alliance Conference.
       
    • On March 5, 2009, the Alliance was promoted during the Alliance for Central Florida Safety “Safety Day” event in Orlando, FL.
       
    • April 15, 2009, the Alliance was promoted during a presentation to Physician Office Managers Association of America meeting in Orlando, FL.

  5. Upcoming Milestones
     
    • Continue to partner with University of South Florida OTI Ed Center.
    • Continue to encourage small businesses in Central Florida to develop and implement effective Safety and Health Management Systems (SHMS).
    • Continue to promote the USC Alliance in the Central Florida Area
    • Continue and expand safety and health training for workers focused all types of emergency preparedness.
    • Continued to work with community safety professionals to ensure the effective delivery of safety and health outreach services to employers that need assistance.
    Planned Events in the Orlando Area
     
    • July 17, 2009 - Hurricane Safety Hazards - Three hour workshop on safety and health hazards after a hurricane.
    • July 21, 2009 - Combustible Dust - Eight hour training of controlling combustible dust given by Georgia Tech grant.
    • August 14, 2009 - Ergonomic Risk Awareness - Free Lunch and Learn.
    • October 2, 2009 - Safety and Health Management Workshop.
    • December 4, 2009 - Pandemic Flu - Workshop.
