Overview

OSHA, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Division of Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Highway Contractor’s Association, Georgia Utility Contractors Association, Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, Georgia Tech Research Institute, 3M Georgia Branch of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Lamar Advertising and Georgia Power are committed to sharing their collective expertise to help foster a culture of injury and illness prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, especially in the area of work zone safety and “Struck By” hazards.

II. Implementation Team and Contributors:

The implementation team members included representatives from OSHA, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Division of Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Highway Contractor’s Association, Georgia Utility Contractors Association, Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, Georgia Tech Research Institute, 3M, Georgia Branch of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Lamar Advertising and Georgia Power. Implementation team meetings were conducted as scheduled on 1/12/09, 2/18/09, 5/19/09, 6/10/09, 7/21/09, 9/9/09 and 11/10/09.

Savannah Area - Representatives from the ASSE, as well as OSHA’s Regional and Savannah Area Offices held a meeting on 9/12/05, 4/10/06, 5/08/06 and 7/10/06.

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

Events

• On November 4, 2009, the Alliance group coordinated a state-wide “safety stand down.” During the “Safety Stand Down” construction sites across Georgia were encouraged to stop work and conduct an hour long work zone safety training presentation (focused on the prevention of struck by accidents). The group also developed an information flyer for the event and a toolbox talk (in both English and Spanish). The “Safety Stand Down” was supported by more than 90 construction firms, utility companies, schools, as well as state and local government agencies. The event impacted a total of 1,724 worksites, which covered a total of 16,194 employees.
• The OSHA 10-hour training provided to Construction Career Technology students at DeKalb North – High School of Technology in January 26 – February 3, 2009, included mention of the Georgia Struck by Alliance and work zone safety.
• The OSHA 10-hour training provided to Construction Career Technology students in Cass High School, February 11 and 12, 2009, included mention of the Georgia Struck by Alliance and work zone safety.
• The OSHA 10-hour training was provided to Automotive Repair Career Technology students at Maxwell High School, March 9, 12 & 16, 2009, included mention of the Georgia Struck by Alliance and work zone safety.

Products

• The group developed an informational flyer and a toolbox talk (in both English and Spanish) for the “Safety Stand Down.” The toolbox talk included a PowerPoint presentation which focused on worker safety and the prevention of work zones hazard.

Outreach and Communication

Events

• On June 12, 2009, the Georgia Branch of the Associated General Contractors signed an addendum and joined the Alliance group.
• On September 9, 2009, Lamar Advertising signed an addendum and joined the Alliance group
• On November 10, 2009, Georgia Power signed an addendum and joined the Alliance group.

Products

• An OSHA news release was issued regarding the “Safety Stand Down” on November 3, 2009.
• An article about the “Safety Stand Down” appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) newspaper prior to the event.
• A story about the “Safety Stand Down” appeared on WALB-TV in Albany, Georgia.

Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

Events

• Several members of the Alliance group participated in a ceremony and service in observance of the National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. During the event the Commissioner, Georgia Department of Transportation, recognized the Georgia Struck by Alliance.

Products

• The Alliance group supported the posted of two billboards by Lamar Advertising. The billboards urged vehicle operators to drive safety when enter the work zones. The billboards were posted in metro Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2010

• Conduct work zone safety training for construction employers, employees and students throughout Georgia in 2010.
• Develop and distribute work zone safety material to employers, employees, students and the public throughout Georgia in 2010.
• Participate in the Georgia Partnership for Transportation Quality (GPTQ) conference in December 2010.
