    Alliance Overview

    The Alliance with the Mexican Consulate in Detroit, Michigan establishes a collaborative relationship to provide Mexican Nationals in Michigan and Ohio and others, information, guidance, and access to education and training resources to promote workers’ rights in protecting their occupational safety and health, and to help them understand U.S. domestic law on the rights of workers and the responsibilities of employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act).

    Alliance Activity

    • Outreach and Communication
      • August 27, 2014 – OSHA participated in Mexican Consulate event with EEOC, Adelante and ABLE providing a speech, education and resources to Hispanic workers, impacting 25-30 individuals. The event was covered by La Prensa, a Hispanic newspaper in the greater Toledo area.
      • August 1, 2015 – OSHA participated in Mexican Consulate event in Youngstown, OH providing education and resources to Hispanic workers and families, impacting 300 individuals.
      • August 31, 2015 – OSHA’s Toledo, Lansing and Cleveland area offices re-signed the Alliance in Detroit; the signing was covered by La Prensa, a Hispanic newspaper in the greater Toledo area.
      • September 1, 2015 – OSHA participated in Labor Week at Adelante in Toledo, Ohio, providing information, education and resources to individuals and Spanish outreach groups, in addition to giving a presentation in Spanish. The event directly impacted 25 workers/families, in addition, representatives from Spanish outreach groups (ABLE, FLOCK) will disseminate the information to a wider network.
      • September 15, 2015 – OSHA delivered/provided Hispanic outreach material to the Consulate of Mexico for distribution during their “Grito De Independencia 2015” event in Detroit, MI.
      • Editions of La Seguridad & Salud shared with the Mexican Consulate throughout the year.
    • Technical Assistance and Training
      • Intermittently – Technical assistance was provided by the Toledo Area Director on several occasions during the course of the evaluation period.

  4. Results
    1. The Alliance with the Mexican Consulate in Detroit, Michigan has opened opportunities to communicate and provide education and resources for under-served and oftentimes, a difficult to reach group of workers. The Alliance has been successful in having stakeholders attend meetings and mobile education events to promote the safety and health of the worker, in addition to educating workers on whistleblower protection activities.
