Construction
- OSHA Regions 2 and 3 held a Construction Focus Four event at Diggerland in West Berlin, NJ that featured live safety demonstrations, a presentation by a trench cave-in survivor, and networking opportunities for 560 attendees.
- OSHA Region 5 established a Strategic Partnership to prevent serious hazards and enhance workplace safety and health practices for workers constructing the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South side.
- The Fort Worth and Dallas Area, TX Offices presented in the virtual Construction Safety Leadership Alliance annual Ladder Safety Symposium hosted by the University of Texas Arlington.
COVID-19
- OSHA Region 2 sponsored a 4-day virtual summit, “Building a Safer Future – Workplaces during the Pandemic” from May 10-13, 2021. The event included a general session that covered OSHA’s COVID National Emphasis Program; recordkeeping requirements; respiratory protection and face masking; and whistleblower and EEO concerns. These were followed by industry-specific sessions for industries including healthcare; retail and grocery; restaurants; construction; and manufacturing. More than 2,200 participated in the general session; more than 750 participated in the session for healthcare.
- The Bridgeport, CT Area Office delivered presentations for the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Eastern Connecticut and the Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut on COVID-19 prevention in the construction industry.
- The Philadelphia, PA Area Office gave a presentation on the COVID-19 National Emphasis Program to the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council.
Fall Prevention
- The Braintree, MA Area Office, in collaboration with the Wage and Hour Division, held a two-hour training during the Fall Stand-Down for Portuguese speaking residential construction workers.
- The Fort Worth and Dallas, TX Area Offices participated in a ladder safety symposium hosted by University of Texas Arlington (UTA). OSHA personnel participated as panelists, and presented safety data related to ladder accidents and fatalities. Over 5,000 contractors reached.
- The Kansas City, MO Area Office, in coordination with the Consulate of Mexico of Kansas City, discussed the importance of fall protection on La Gran X, a Hispanic radio station, and Kansas City Univision, a Hispanic TV station.
Healthcare
- OSHA Regions 2, 5, and 7 cosponsored a virtual Healthcare Symposium on August 31, 2021 in which more than 1,600 participated. The event provided stakeholders with the opportunity to learn more about OSHA’s approach to COVID-19, as well as other healthcare topics, such as musculoskeletal disorders and workplace violence.
- The Providence, RI Area Office gave a presentation on COVID-19 prevention to an association of nursing home administrators in Rhode Island.
- The New York, NY Regional Office provided a series of presentations on the COVID-19 Healthcare Emergency Temporary Standard for the New Jersey Hospital Association.
Labor Rights Week
- The Boston, MA Regional Office and Providence, RI Area office, in collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico in Boston, MA, participated in a 4-day virtual training during Labor Rights Week to educate Spanish-speaking workers on their rights to a safe and healthful workplace.
- The Denver, CO Regional Office delivered a presentation on workers’ rights during Labor Rights Week at the Consulate of Mexico in Denver.
- The Omaha, NE Area Office developed a 10-minute labor rights video in Spanish for the Mexican Consulate, and presented the video during Labor Rights Week.
Manufacturing
- OSHA Region 2 conducted a week-long Amputation Safety Stand Down in September 2021 to raise awareness about occupational amputation hazards. Attendees from all over the country and the world participated, with an average of 150 attendees per session.
- The Peoria, IL Area Office gave a presentation for the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center and the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association to raise awareness of OSHA Region 5’s Regional Emphasis Program on Noise.
- The Concord, NH Area Office delivered a presentation on industrial ventilation and health hazards in manufacturing establishments as part of the New England Roundtable series.
- The Georgia Area Offices, through their alliance with the Georgia Tech On-Site Consultation Program and Georgia Department of Health, developed and distributed fact sheets on occupational overexposure to lead in several industries, including battery manufacturing.
Severe Weather
- The Augusta, ME Area Office was interviewed by a local television station regarding heat hazards in the workplace.
- The Allentown, PA Area Office provided tree-care safety information to tree care industry employees conducting storm clean-up efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Idea.
- The El Paso, TX Area Office distributed worker safety resources for hurricane and flood cleanup and recovery to more than 200 stakeholders during National Preparedness Month.
- The Houston-South, TX Area Office was interviewed about heat illness prevention on the Telemundo and Univision television stations in June 2021.
- The San Francisco, CA Regional Office gave a presentation on Heat Injury and Illness Prevention to employees at a California casino.
Suicide Prevention
- The Kansas City Area and St. Louis, Missouri Area Offices, in conjunction with the Builders’ Association, the Associated General Contractors of Missouri and others, held a Suicide Prevention Stand-Down Week. More than 63,000 employers from at least 43 states registered to participate.
- The St. Louis, MO Area Office participated in seven local Suicide Stand-Down events attended by 1,525 construction workers and management representatives.
- The St. Louis, MO Area Office distributed mental health and suicide prevention outreach materials to three area hospital systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trenching and Excavation
- The Denver, CO Regional Office had several productive sessions with the Trenching and Excavation Safety Taskforce (TEST) a collection of contractors, equipment rental companies, government, and other organizations working to raise awareness about trench hazards.
- The Tampa, FL Area Office participated in a virtual presentation regarding OSHA’s trenching and excavation requirements for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Sunshine Utility Contractors Association (SUCA), and Sunshine 811.
COVID-19
- The Bridgeport, Connecticut Area Office conducted a virtual training through the Brazilian Workers Center to provide workers and their families with information regarding preventing workplace exposures to COVID-19.
- The Atlanta-West, Georgia Area Office conducted three meetings with the Georgia Farmworker Task Force and discussed the CDC COVID-19 Guidelines for Agricultural Workers and Employers / H-2A workers. This office also provided COVID-19 technical assistance to the Center for Pan Asian Community Services, a refugee organization supporting poultry workers.
- OSHA Region 4 staff sent a COVID-19 outreach letter and resource updates to numerous stakeholders, including 30 local stakeholders in Georgia, including construction-related associations (English and Spanish), Georgia 811, Chambers of Commerce (English and Spanish), Latino Consulates, Georgia Farmworker Task Force members, Healthcare organizations, Georgia Struck by Alliance members and others. The goal of this effort was to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on workers across the region.
- The Cleveland, Ohio Area Office CAS conducted two joint presentations with DOL’s Wage and Hour Division regarding the Family First Act and OSHA COVID-19 compliance assistance resources.
- OSHA’s Wisconsin Area Offices participated in the Migrant Farmworker COVID Committee established in their state to support the health and well-being of this vulnerable community during the pandemic.
- OSHA Region 8 conducted webinars almost weekly to share information regarding OSHA’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic with a variety of stakeholders. These webinars were conducted through the local OSHA Outreach Training Centers, the Montana Safety Fest, and many trade associations and organizations, and reached thousands of employers
- The Boise, Idaho Area Office gave presentations on OSHA and COVID-19 to safety professionals including the Southern Idaho Manufacturers Safety and Health Association (May 2020), the Snake River Coalition (May 2020), and the American Society of Safety Professionals (September 2020).
Fall Prevention
- OSHA Area Offices in New England held a Virtual Fall Stand Down with Keene State College to emphasize workplace fall protection and prevention.
- The Boston North Area Office in Andover, Massachusetts provided free virtual fall protection training to small residential construction contractors.
- The Omaha, Nebraska Area Office participated with a local construction site to conduct a Fall Stand-Down event. This office also secured a gubernatorial proclamation declaring September 14, 2020 – September 18, 2020 to be “Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction Week” in the State of Nebraska.
- The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Area Office participated in a Fall Stand-Down event at a residential community under construction.
Healthcare
- The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Area Office conducted a webinar for the Pennsylvania Health Care Association on workplace safety and health programs.
- The Peoria, Illinois Area Office conducted two presentations for the Illinois Nursing Home Administrators’ Association, covering topics such as COVID-19, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, reporting & recording requirements, bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication, lockout/tagout, ladders, and workplace violence.
- The Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio Area Offices and the Ohio On-Site Consultation Program discussed OSHA’s respiratory protection requirements and other healthcare related OSHA standards during an Ohio Health Care Association webinar on September 14, 2020.
- Through their Alliance, the Denver and Englewood, Colorado Area Offices collaborated with the Colorado Health Care Association, an organization representing assisted living facilities, to deliver bimonthly webinars on topics such as COVID-19, bloodborne pathogens, workplace violence, recordkeeping and general OSHA inspections.
Hispanic/Latino Workers and Employers
- The Jackson, Mississippi Area Office signed an alliance with the Consulate General of Mexico in New Orleans, and delivered a Spanish-language presentation during Labor Rights Week.
- The Cleveland, Ohio Area Office coordinated with area Mexican consulates to include safety information on their website’s regarding OSHA’s mission. The outreach targeted vulnerable, youth, and immigrant workers.
- The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area Office created a 3-minute video in Spanish about OSHA’s mission, available resources and the response to COVID-19. The Latin American Chamber of Commerce in Tulsa posted the video on their Facebook page, where it received 1,100 views / 50 shares.
- The San Antonio, Texas Area Office provided presentations in Spanish to the Del Rio Mexican Consulate, Eagle Pass Mexican Consulate, and Guatemalan Consulate during Labor Rights Week. Topics covered included worker rights, fall protection, safety and health programs, COVID-19 during Labor Rights Week.
- The Boise, Idaho Area Office gave monthly, bilingual presentations at the Mexican Consulate on topics including worker rights, fall protection and heat stress.
Severe Weather
- During Hurricanes Sally & Zeta, the Jackson, Mississippi Area Office provided compliance assistance to the lower three counties (Hancock, Harrison & Jackson) on the Mississippi gulf coast.
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office gave an interview for a local radio station on how to prevent heat stroke and heat exhaustion for outdoor workers.
Roadway Safety
- The Atlanta-West Area Office collaborated with the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Georgia to develop and host an event for the 2020 National Work Zone Awareness Week. The highlight of the week was the Georgia Struck-By Safety Stand Down, which emphasized work zone safety.
- The Charleston, West Virginia Area Office delivered a presentation for the Contractors Association of West Virginia on work zone safety and previous fatalities.
Suicide Prevention
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office and The Builders’ Association with 14 private construction and general industry companies coordinated to hold the first MO/KAN Suicide Prevention Stand-Down Week to increase the awareness of Suicide Prevention and opioid use in both construction and general industry. Twelve states registered to participate and the event received 100,000 hits on social media. During the same week the Kansas City, Missouri, Area Office used RADIO LA MEGA STATION to reach out to workers, employers, and the general public across 5 states.
- Through the Alliance with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention- Eastern Division, the Region I (Boston) Regional Office arranged for two training sessions on AFSP’s “Talk Saves Lives” Program for federal employees.
- The Boston North Area Office in Andover, Massachusetts represented OSHA at a New England Safety Roundtable webinar on suicide prevention in the workplace.
- The Houston North, Texas Area Office delivered a presentation to the Houston STEPS Network on worker health, suicide prevention, and opioid abuse.
Temporary Workers
- OSHA Region 8 partnered with Employbridge, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and the American Staffing Association (ASA) to give a national webinar for staffing agencies and host employers.
- The Corpus Christi, Texas Area Office gave a presentation to area staffing agencies on OSHA resources for temporary worker safety and health.
- The Concord, New Hampshire Area Office delivered a webinar on contractor and temporary worker safety for the New Hampshire General Industry Roundtable.
Young Workers
- The Boston North Area Office in Andover, Massachusetts participates on vocational school advisory boards in events and trainings sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of Vocational School Administrators to promote safety of youth workers and vocational high school students.
- The Peoria, Illinois Area Office annually conducts outreach efforts for young workers with the Joint Electrical Apprenticeship Training with the IBEW and sessions for the Construction Industry Work Based Learning Program for high school students. The sessions address worker rights, excavation safety, fall hazards, amputation prevention, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, electrical hazards, lockout, confined space, and silica.
- The Boise, Idaho Area Office participated in OSHA 10-Hour training at the Dennis Technical Education Center as part of Alliance activity with the Boise School District. The Boise Area Office helps coordinate the courses at the high school with local volunteers that are authorized instructors and subject matter experts.
Amputations
- OSHA Region 6 and the Little Rock, Arkansas Area Office hosted the 5th annual Amputation Prevention Stand-Down to raise awareness about amputation hazards. During the event, companies volunteered to hold stand-downs to provide information on the identification, mitigation, and elimination of amputation hazards. The stand-downs reached more than 10,000 workers. (September 2019)
- The Denver, Colorado Area Office provided an OSHA Update for the DJ Basin Safety Council. The update covered amputations and hospitalizations in oil and gas operations. (January 2019)
Fall Prevention Campaign
- OSHA Region 6 participated in a Fall Prevention Stand-Down event at the Texas Rangers stadium. There were 1,600 attendees. (June 2019)
- The Allentown, Pennsylvania Area Office gave a presentation on fall prevention for chimney workers at Chimney Expo 2019. (December 2018)
- The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Regional Office conducted a Focus Four campaign to address the leading causes of fatalities in construction: falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, and electrical. The campaign used toolbox talks and outreach events to raise awareness of these hazards. (March to June 2019)
- The Boise, Idaho Area Office participated in a Fall Prevention Stand-Down event hosted by a general contractor in Boise, Idaho. There were 350-400 attendees at this annual event. (May 2019)
Grain Handling
- The Fort Worth, Texas Area Office collaborated with the local Mexican and Salvadoran Consulates as part of the Stand-Up for Grain Engulfment Prevention Week. The Area Offices gave presentations and provided OSHA information on grain handling safety at Consulate events. (March 2019)
- The Baltimore/Washington Area Office provide a presentation on grain safety for the Maryland Grain Producers Association. About 75 local grain producers with over 200 stakeholders attended. (March 2019)
- The Baton Rouge, Louisiana Area Office staffed an OSHA booth at the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) Expo. (March 2019)
Health Care
- The Savannah, Georgia Area Office participated in a workplace violence panel for the Georgia Primary Care Association. (October 2018)
- The Denver, Colorado Area Office provided an OSHA booth at the Colorado Hospital Association’s annual conference. The Association has an Alliance with OSHA. (September 2019)
- The Austin, Texas Area Office gave a briefing on heat stress to employees at the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute of Texas. (May 2019)
Hispanic Employers and Employees
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office gave monthly presentations at the Mexican Consulate on topics including worker rights, fall protection, hazard communication, and heat stress. (October 2018 to September 2019)
- OSHA Region 6 and the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), North Texas Chapter, co-sponsored a free live outdoor trench training event for 267 participants. The event, provided in English and Spanish, featured seven stations that covered topics such as sloping and benching, trench boxes, and trenchless technology. (September 2019)
- The Fort Worth, Texas Area Office provided an OSHA exhibit booth at an awards event sponsored by the Regional Hispanic Contractors Association. (March 2019)
- The Columbus, Ohio Area Office shared a booth with the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division at the Indianapolis Mexican Consulate’s mobile event in Columbus. (October 2018)
Hot and Cold Weather
- The Georgia Area Offices and Associated General Contractors of Georgia held a winter weather safety stand-down to emphasize the importance of workplace safety during the winter months. The event reached more than 14,000 employees. (November 2018)
- Area Offices in Florida and Georgia gave presentations on heat illness prevention and other topics during the Region 4 Heat Illness Prevention/Landscaping Safety Stand-Down. (April 2019)
- The Savannah, Georgia Area Office gave an interview for a local television station on how to protect workers from heat-related illnesses and how to use the OSHA/NIOSH heat app. (August 2019)
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office gave an interview for a local radio station on how to prevent heat strokes and heat exhaustion for outdoor workers. (August 2019)
Oil and Gas
- OSHA Region 6 participated in the Oil and Gas Safety Conference in Houston. There were more than 1,500 attendees. (December 2018)
- OSHA Region 6 provided an OSHA Update at the Association of Energy Service Companies (AESC) annual conference in Fort Worth, Texas. (September 2019)
- The Denver, Colorado Area Office provided an OSHA Update for the DJ Basin Safety Council. The update covered amputations and hospitalizations in oil and gas operations. (January 2019)
- The Houston North, Texas Area Office gave a presentation on OSHA’s multi-employer worksite policy for the Greater Houston Service Transmission, Exploration & Production Safety (STEPS) Network. (March 2019)
Safe + Sound Campaign
- In support of Safe + Sound Week, the Andover, Massachusetts Area Office and the state of Massachusetts held an event for more than 100 attendees. (August 2019)
- The Raleigh, North Carolina Area Office participated in a Safe + Sound event with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. (August 2019)
- The Omaha, Nebraska Area Office gave a presentation at a Safe + Sound event sponsored by a local company. Approximately 800 people attended, including temporary and non-English-speaking workers. (August 2019)
- The Peoria, Illinois Area Office participated in Safe + Sound Week kickoff events in Illinois. OSHA representatives gave presentations covering a variety of topics, including Safe + Sound activities, combustible dust, fall hazards, and silica standards. (August 2019)
- The Governor of Nebraska signed a Safe + Sound proclamation. As part of the ceremony, the Omaha, Nebraska Area Office gave a presentation on the Safe + Sound campaign, workplace fatalities, falls, grain handling, and trenching. (August 2019)
Silica
- The Houston North, Texas Area Office gave a presentation on silica in construction for the International Concrete Repair Institute, Houston Chapter. (October 2018)
- The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Area Office gave a presentation on silica and other topics for the National Non-Ferrous Founders Society. (June 2019)
- The Dallas, Texas Area Office provided a break-out session on silica at the Dallas Build Expo USA event. (February 2019)
- The Denver, Colorado Area Office gave presentations on silica in construction for the Colorado Contractors Association, an Alliance participant. (July 2019)
Small Business
- The Buffalo, New York Area Office worked with the Small Business Administration to speak to small start-up companies on various OSHA topics, including how to navigate the OSHA website and an introduction to On-Site Consultation. (May 2019)
- The Buffalo, New York Area Office provided a full-day seminar for the Small Business Development Center in Jamestown, New York. (May 2019)
- OSHA Region 6 provided outreach to small construction contractors at Build Expo USA events in Austin and Dallas, Texas. (February 2019)
- As part of its Alliance with Pennsylvania On-Site Consultation and the Clarion University Small Business Development Center, the Erie, Pennsylvania Area Office provided several OSHA seminars for the small business community. (October to August 2019)
- OSHA Region 1 provided a webinar on how small business can comply with OSHA regulations for SCORE, an organization that mentors small businesses. (January 2019)
Temporary Workers
- OSHA Region 5 conducted two conference on temporary worker safety at junior colleges in the Chicagoland area for a total of 300 attendees. (September 2019)
- The Allentown, Pennsylvania Area Office gave a presentation on workplace safety and health for a staffing agency. (October 2018)
- The Buffalo, New York Area Office participated in a panel on temporary workers at a seminar sponsored by the Cornell School of Industrial Relations and the Worker Institute. (November 2018)
- The Augusta, Maine Area Office provided an overview of safety and health information and the OSHA website for local temporary staffing agencies. (March 2019)
Trenching
- OSHA Region 10 and the North American Excavation Shoring Association (NAXSA) held a trench safety summit in Washington state for more than 400 attendees featuring classroom training and outdoor demonstrations. (October 2019)
- OSHA Region 8 and the North American Excavation Shoring Association (NAXSA) held a free full-day trench safety summit in Brighton, Colorado. More than 300 people attended the summit, which featured free breakfast and lunch, classroom training, and live outdoor demonstrations. (Sep. 2019)
- The Ft. Lauderdale Area Office signed an Alliance with the Underground Contractors Association of South Florida and conducted a trench stand-down in conjunction with the signing. (June 2019)
- OSHA Region 3 collaborated with the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) and other organizations on a trenching safety event. Industry experts at six stations spoke on trenching and excavation hazards and solutions. Breakout sessions provided hands-on activities such as installing protective systems, soil analysis, rescue operations, and atmospheric testing. (June 2019)
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office gave a presentation on trenching hazards and solutions at the Damage Prevention and Excavation Safety Summit in Springfield, Missouri. The summit, hosted by the Missouri Common Ground Alliance, was attended by 1,200 participants that included employers, workers, and representatives of trade schools, local unions, fire departments, and other organizations from more than 20 states. - The Toledo, Ohio Area Office sent an email blast to its stakeholders on the youth summer safety campaign. (May 2019)
- OSHA Region 4 provided safety and health information at the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia Career Expo. The event featured hands-on displays that allowed students to interact with leaders in the construction, energy, and mining industries. (March 2019)
- OSHA's Kansas City, Missouri Area Office participated in a high school safety event attended by more than 2,000 students. OSHA staff talked with students about workers' rights, safety and health in their workplaces, whistleblower rights, and how to use OSHA’s website. (October 2018)
- OSHA Region 3 representatives addressed a conference in Pennsylvania attended by more than 100 school-to-career coordinators, counselors, school administrators, teachers, and state Department of Education staff. Subjects included OSHA's Alliances with both the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute and the Upper Bucks County Technical School. OSHA provides workplace safety guidance to both schools, and conducts outreach activities for students preparing for careers in welding, healthcare, construction, carpentry, and plumbing. Amputations
- The Madison, Wisconsin Area Office developed a case study of an amputation from a jointer in a woodworking shop and sent it to high schools in the Madison area. (December 2017)
- As part of its Alliance with the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of San Antonio, the San Antonio, Texas Area Office provided a training session on amputation awareness for AGC members. (August 2018)

- In support of the 2018 National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, the Boston South, Massachusetts Area Office participated in a stand-down held by YouthBuild Boston. This event was for high school and young workers building an affordable house for the City of Boston through a partnership with YouthBuild Boston, the Carpenter's Union, and Madison Park High School. Hispanic Employers and Employees
- The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area Office and the Little Rock, Arkansas Area Office conducted a Hispanic Construction Safety Seminar in Spanish for 35 attendees representing more than 400 employees. The training addressed frequently cited violations in the construction industry. (February 2018)
- In support of the 2018 National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, the Birmingham, Alabama Area Office gave presentations in English and Spanish at a stand-down event hosted by a construction company engaged in bridge construction projects. (May 2018)
- The Austin, Texas Area Office gave speeches in Spanish at the local Mexican Consulate on "All About OSHA" and worker rights. (August 2018)
Hot and Cold Weather
- The Georgia Area Offices and Associated General Contractors of Georgia held a cold weather safety stand-down to emphasize the importance of workplace safety during the winter months. The event reached 11,690 employees at 195 job sites. (January 2018)
- Area Offices in Florida and Georgia gave presentations on heat illness prevention and other topics during the Region 4 Heat Illness Prevention/Landscaping Safety Stand-Down. The event reached 37 employers and 6,500 workers. (April 2018)
Oil and Gas
- As part of its Alliance with the Mid Continent Exploration and Production Safety Network, the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area Office gave presentations on various OSHA topics to oil and gas industry safety professionals at monthly meetings. (October 2017 to September 2018)
- As part of its Alliance with the Mountain States Energy Alliance, the Denver, Colorado Area Office gave a presentation on silica to oil and gas employers. (May 2018)
- Through its Alliance with Region 6, the Association of Energy Service Companies (AESC) provided training to OSHA staff on the safety and health procedures used by the oil and gas well servicing industry and methods of compliance with OSHA regulations. This one-day training event in El Reno, Oklahoma, including classroom training and a demonstration of a well service rig in action. (August 2018)
Safe + Sound Campaign
- In support of Safe + Sound Week, the Boston, Massachusetts Regional Office participated in a workshop to assist organizations with emergency planning and community right to know, chemical safety, chemical facility and security, and chemical transportation. The workshop was a collaborative effort with an OSHA Education Center, Department of Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency, and other local, federal, and state partners. (August 2018)
- The Atlanta West, Georgia Area Office provided an update on OSHA's fatality investigations in Georgia during workshops held by the Associated General Contractors of Georgia during Safe + Sound Week. The workshops focused on the importance of management leadership in starting or enhancing a safety and health program. (August 2018)
- The Birmingham, Alabama Area Office participated in a Safe + Sound event held by Nucor Steel in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The panel discussion focused on hazard recognition and control. (August 2018)

- The Hartford, Connecticut Area Office gave a presentation on the hazards of silica in construction for the Connecticut Minority Construction Council. (Feb. 2018)

- The Dallas, Texas Area Office gave a presentation in English and Spanish on silica in construction at an OSHA Strategic Partnership construction site. The OSHA representative used a public address system to inform more than 130 workers and managers about airborne crystalline silica exposure while dry cutting concrete bricks and sandblasting. - The Englewood, Colorado Area Office gave a presentation to a community organization to discuss employee rights, OSHA's temporary worker initiatives, and reaching hard-to-reach workers. (Dec. 2017)
- The Birmingham, Alabama Area Office gave a presentation on protecting temporary workers at the Manufacture Alabama Safety/Health/Human Resources Conference. (April 2018)
- The Springfield, Massachusetts Area Office provided an OSHA Update at a one-day seminar on protecting the health and safety of temporary workers hosted by the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards and the Massachusetts On-Site Consultation Program. (Sep. 2018)
Trenching
- Region 6 participated in the West Texas Excavation Safety Day, which provided more than 300 attendees with training for first responders, "call before you dig" requirements, personal protective equipment demonstrations, and excavation safety demonstrations. The event was organized by the West Texas Damage Prevention Council in association with Texas 811. (October 2017)
- The Appleton, Wisconsin Area Office highlighted training relevant to small excavation companies at Utility Damage Prevention meetings sponsored by the Damage Prevention Council of Wisconsin and Diggers Hotline. (Jan. 2018)
- Region 5 partnered with the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, Allied Construction Industries, and Turner Construction to host a trench safety workshop in Cincinnati. The workshop came after a recent trench fatality in Ohio, with the goal to help prevent future fatalities, particularly in smaller residential construction operations. (May 2018)
- The Birmingham, Alabama Area Office worked with the Tennessee Valley Training Center to hold a trench safety stand-down in conjunction with the national trench safety stand-down. (June 2018)
- The Kansas City, Missouri Area Office participated in a trench safety stand-down at Arrowhead Stadium with 800 attendees. (July 2018)
- Region 6 and the North Texas National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) co-hosted a trench training event in Texas for underground utility contractors and excavators on preventing trench-related hazards. The event provided more than 200 English- and Spanish-speaking attendees with information on work procedures, industry practices, incident trends and lessons learned, and compliance resources to reduce hazards. Topics included utility location, sloping and benching, trench boxes, shore systems, trenchless technology, confined space and retrieval gear, and emergency preparedness. This was the fourth event on trench safety training sponsored by Region 6 and North Texas NUCA. (September 2018)
- The Denver, Colorado Regional Office and the North American Excavation Shoring Association hosted the Colorado Trench Safety Summit to raise awareness of hazards and best practices. Nearly 400 attendees participated in the all-day event, which included training, live demonstrations, and a mock trench rescue from local first responders. (Oct. 2018)
Young Workers
- The Madison, Wisconsin Area Office sent a "Safety Spotlight on Young Workers" to 150 high school principals in the Madison area. (October 2017)
- The Birmingham Area Office gave a presentation to the youth enrolled in the Academy of Craft Training at Brewer High School in Somerville, Alabama. OSHA provided information on falls, scaffolding, power tools, amputations, and Safe + Sound Week. The Academy is a public/private partnership between the construction industry and the State of Alabama's K-12 education system with the mission to recruit, educate, and guide high school students for educational and employment opportunities in the construction industry. Construction
- The Atlanta-West Area Office participated in two events during Women in Construction Week in March 2022 that addressed workplace safety and health issues for women considering careers or already employed in the field of construction.
- The Atlanta-East, GA Area Office conducted training for members of the Georgia Highway Contractors Association in Spring 2022 and emphasized the importance of and requirement to perform an engineering survey before initiating demolition activities.
- The Texas Area Offices, in coordination with the Damage Prevention Council of Texas, hosted quarterly construction safety workshops for construction companies. Topics included trench safety, soil classification, competent person responsibilities, heat stress, forklift safety, work zone safety, the Safe + Sound campaign, and suicide/mental health in construction.
Fall Prevention
- The Boise, ID Area Office and the Idaho Construction Specialty Trades OSHA Strategic Partnership participants held a Fall Stand-Down event for more than 500 participants at Engineering Structures, Inc.
- The Austin, TX Area Office participated in a Fall Stand-Down event for more than 400 workers at JE Dunn Construction, with which Region 6 has an OSHA Strategic Partnership to promote safety at a large construction site.
- The Region 8 (Denver) Regional Office worked closely with the Colorado Roofing Association to provide three in-depth, interactive outreach events that focused on increasing fall protection compliance.
Grain Handling
- The Boise, ID Area Office spoke at the Pacific Northwest Grain & Feed Association’s annual Warehouseman’s Conference on workplace safety and health culture in the grain handling industry.
- The Corpus Christi, TX Area Office presented information on grain industry hazards at the annual Upper Gulf Coast Grain Handler’s Conference, the South Texas Grain Handler’s Conference, and the South Texas Country Elevators Association Conference, reaching more than 250 people.
- The Sioux Falls, SD Area Office collaborated with area stakeholders to host a Grain Stand-Up event for several thousand agricultural workers in North and South Dakota in March 2022. Speakers discussed grain rescue operations and hosted a question and answer panel.
- The Toledo, OH Area Office opened the Ohio Grain Safety event organized by the Ohio Fire Academy, OSHA On-Site Consultation, and the Ohio State University’s Agricultural Safety and Health Program.
Heat Illness Prevention
- The Region 2 (New York) Regional Office staff participated in an interview on OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on indoor and outdoor heat for an article published in August 2022.
- The Philadelphia, PA Area Office shared information about heat illness prevention on an African-American talk radio station serving greater Philadelphia.
- OSHA Region 5 organized and hosted a three-part webinar series, “Act Now to Prevent Heat Illness at Work” in collaboration with NIOSH’s Office of Construction Safety and Health, the Region 5 OSHA Training Institute Education Centers, and the Region 5 On-Site Consultation Programs.
Recordkeeping
- The Region 2 (New York) Regional Office sponsored webinars on OSHA injury reporting and tracking requirements that were attended by more than 1,800 stakeholders.
- The Houston North, TX Area Office delivered a virtual presentation on OSHA recordkeeping requirements to oil and gas industry managers, including some who joined from offshore platforms.
- The Region 8 (Denver) Regional Office sponsored webinars on OSHA injury reporting and tracking requirements, reaching more than 100 stakeholders.
Severe Weather
- The Austin, TX Area Office distributed outreach materials on tree trimming, mold, and fall hazards after several tornadoes struck the area.
- The Region 6 (Dallas) Regional Office participated in a panel discussion with other federal agencies, including the Small Business Administration and DOL’s Wage and Hour Division, about resources to support workers affected by national disasters. The event was in commemoration of Disaster Preparedness Month.
- The Tampa, FL Area Office proactively established relationships with area emergency operations centers in advance of hurricane season, leading to a more coordinated, effective response to Hurricane Ian.
- The Wilmington, DE Area Office appeared on a local television station following a winter storm to remind employers and workers how to prevent winter weather workplace hazards.
Small Business
- OSHA Region 1 collaborated with all Region 1 On-Site Consultation Programs to hold a Small Business and Consultation Virtual Event that spotlighted resources and services available to small businesses.
- The Boston-North (Andover), MA Area Office holds free, monthly, bilingual training classes to assist small employers with residential construction challenges.
- The St. Louis, MO Area Office gave a presentation to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Eastern & Southwest Missouri & Southern Illinois regarding OSHA’s enforcement activities and compliance assistance resources available to small businesses.
Suicide Prevention
- The Kansas City, St. Louis, and Wichita Area Offices participated in more than ten Stand-Down events in commemoration of Construction Suicide Prevention Week in September 2022, which aims to promote mental health and raise awareness of substance abuse issues and suicide risk in the construction industry.
- The Region 8 (Denver) Regional Office participated in the first annual Construction Working Minds Summit on suicide prevention in the construction industry in May 2022.
Trenching and Excavation
- The Pittsburgh, PA Area Office staffed an information booth and conducted a workshop on trenching safety during PA One Call Day.
- The Sioux Falls, SD Area Office and the South Dakota 811 Notification Board used their Alliance to promote trench and excavation safety throughout the state at more than a dozen “rodeo” events in a one-week period in March 2022. Hundreds of excavation contractors and workers attended.
- The St. Louis, MO Area Office delivered a presentation at the Missouri Water and Wastewater Conference discussing strategies for preventing trenching and excavation hazards.
Underserved Workers
- The Boston-South (Braintree), MA Area Office collaborated with the New Bedford Workers Center (Centro Comuntario De Trabajadores, CCT) to provide information in Spanish about workplace hazards and workers’ rights (including whistleblower protections) to workers in the seafood processing, recycling and waste management, and construction industries in southeastern Massachusetts.
- The Region 2 (New York) Regional Office initiated a bilingual (English/Spanish) daily messaging campaign to share information regarding workers’ rights, whistleblower protections, and wage and hour requirements.
- The Fort Lauderdale, FL Area Office collaborated with WeCount! a local advocacy organization, in conducting several outreach events on heat illness prevention and workers’ rights for farmworkers.
- The Little Rock, AR Area Office collaborated with the local consulate to deliver a workers’ rights presentation that was translated into Marshallese. OSHA Representatives later attended the Stroll the Atolls cultural festival in Springdale, AR, where they distributed OSHA publications in Marshallese.
Youth/Teen Workers
- The Braintree, MA Area Office provided an introduction to occupational health and safety and workers’ rights for carpentry students at a local technical high school.
- The Philadelphia, PA Area Office conducted training for apprentices at the Steamfitters Local 420 Training Center regarding OSHA, workplace hazard identification, and workers’ rights.
- The St. Louis, MO Area Office staffed a booth at the “St. Louis Build My Future” event that introduces St. Louis / St. Charles County high school students to construction trades.
- The Lubbock, TX Area Office participated in “Jobs, Y’All”—a career exploration event for more than 400 eighth graders—and shared information regarding teen worker safety, and workers’ rights.
