Subject: 29 CFR 1910.217 and 29 CFR 1910.212; Applicability of Platen Presses
1. Purpose
- To provide specific clarifications on the applicability of 29 CFR
1910.217 and 29 CFR 1910.212 to platen presses
2. Directive Affected
- None.
3. Background
- In the 1.1 Scope section of ANSI-B11.1-1971, Safety Requirements for
Construction, Care and Use of Mechanical Power Presses the standard applies
only to those mechanically powered machines that shear, punch, form or
assemble metal or other material by means of tools or dies attached to
slides.
4. Clarification
- The Office of Standards Development currently promulgating a change
to 29 CFR 1910.217(a)(5) that will add platen presses to the list of excluded
machines. Therefore, Section 29 CFR 1910.212 shall apply to point of
operation guarding for platen presses.
