The grantee will develop and conduct training for telecommunications workers who are still currently involved in disaster–related activities in the hardest storm hit areas of downtown Manhattan, State Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, New York. Topics will include but are not limited to electrical safety, lead, chemical hazards, mold, and personal protective equipment. A Telecommunications Disaster Preparedness and Response Guide will be developed for leadership and a guidebook for response workers.
Education & Training Institute, Inc. (dba New Labor) New Brunswick NJ $250,000 Disaster Relief
The grantee will utilize Safety Liaisons to disseminate occupational safety and health information and training to workers involved in the recovery and rebuilding in New Jersey through tailgate talks, training and provide technical assistance on such topics as ladders, scaffolds, fall protection, power tools, mold, respiratory protection, and personal protective equipment. Training will be developed for day laborers who are doing the bulk of the Sandy construction, with a special focus on residential construction activities. Training will be provided in English and Spanish.
National Day Laborer Organizing Network Los Angeles CA $312,500 Disaster Relief
The grantee will develop training on occupational safety and health worksite hazards, personnel protective equipment, and workers’ rights. Curriculum topics include mold, fall hazards, and chemical/biological hazards. Training will be geared toward day laborer recovery workers in Staten Island, Brooklyn and parts of New Jersey. Training will be provided in English and Spanish.
New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health, Inc. New York NY $187,500 Disaster Relief
The grantee will provide safety and health training associated with clean-up and recovery to immigrant, day laborers and others involved in reconstruction/clean up through community-based, faith based organizations, and unions. Training will be focused specifically in Long Island, New York. A mold remediation curriculum will be developed and training programs will be tailored for the types of jobs and exposures which workers and volunteers might encounter. Training will be provided in English and Spanish.
Work Environment Council of New Jersey Trenton NJ $250,000 Disaster Relief
The grantee will provide occupational safety and health training to hard-to-reach workers, workers in high-hazard industries, and small businesses in New Jersey. Training topics include emergency preparedness, emergency response, mold, fall protection, workers’ rights, Whistleblower Protection, and other safety and health hazards facing recovery workers. Public communications of the hazard information and training opportunities will be disseminated through traditional media, social media, and direct handouts.
