The grantee will deliver training on ergonomic hazards for workers in the commercial fishing and fish processing industry. The goal is to educate workers on the basics of ergonomics including assessing ergonomic hazards in the workplace, redesigning work space for improved ergonomics, prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and exercises for preventing and relieving symptoms associated with MSDs. Training will be offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.
Asian Immigrant Women Advocates	Oakland	CA	$57,983	Ergonomic Hazards
The grantee will present two hours of basic ergonomics training to limited English-speaking Asian immigrant women homecare workers in California. Training will cover the basic concept of musculoskeletal injuries, how to recognize ergonomic hazards in the workplace, and injury prevention and mitigation techniques. Handouts regarding ergonomics will be provided to participants. Training will be offered in Chinese and Korean.
National Jewish Health	Denver	CO	$105,300	Multiple Topics
The grantee will develop and deliver training on multiple topics to automotive industry workers. The training will cover hazards to which automotive repair workers, mechanics and technicians can be exposed to in certain jobs including crystalline silica, asbestos, lead, hexavalent chromium and physical hazards that can cause respiratory disease, neurologic problems, skin disorders, allergies, cancer, hearing loss, eye injuries, and ergonomic injuries.
Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois	Champaign	IL	$105,300	Agricultural Safety including Grain Handling Operations
The grantee will provide training covering topics associated with safe grain bin entry to workers and employers in grain handling operations both production (farm) and commercial in the Midwest. Training materials will include a PowerPoint presentation and instructor notes, participatory exercise and/or demonstrations, participant manuals/handouts, a video and curriculum materials written for low literacy workers.
National Roofing Contractors Association	Rosemont	IL	$105,231	Fall Protection in Construction
The grantee will provide training that focuses on protecting roofing workers from falls from roofs, ladders and scaffolds. Training will include residential fall protection requirements, written fall protection plans, hands-on training concerning fall protection, and rescue procedures after a fall. The target audience is roofing workers, especially those in smaller companies that do steep-slope roofing work. Training and materials will be provided in both English and Spanish.
Kansas State University	Manhattan	KS	$104,901	Agricultural Safety including Grain Handling Operations
This grantee will provide training to workers and employers on how to prevent grain dust explosions. Plan to develop educational materials to cover controlling dust generation during unloading and grain handling, avoiding turbulence during handling, better control of bucket elevator operation, and use of appropriate sensors and explosion vents. The training and materials will be developed/conducted in English and Spanish.
Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health	Dorchester	MA	$104,196	Work Place Violence
The grantee will offer work place violence training for young workers and small businesses employing youth. Training will include an introduction to hazard identification and control; worker rights and responsibilities; and the identification and mitigation of work place violence in the retail and healthcare settings. Training activities will utilize participatory learning methods including interactive discussion, case studies, and role playing.
University of Southern Maine	Portland	ME	$100,495	Work Place Violence
The grantee will develop a one-hour, web-based work place violence training program for home care assistants and workers in small, community-based nursing homes. This on-line program will provide links to relevant handouts and organizations.
UMDNJ-School of Public Health	Piscataway	NJ	$105,300	Injury and Illness Prevention Programs
The grantee will provide training on how to develop and manage an Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Training topics will include worker rights under OSHA, management leadership, employee participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, training, and evaluation of program effectiveness. A "user's manual" will be developed that provides various strategies, techniques, and materials on the control of hazards.
Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health	Buffalo	NY	$91,067	Ergonomic Hazards
The grantee will conduct training on best practices for preventing musculoskeletal disorders in safe patient handling for healthcare workers in acute-care and long-term care facilities located in New York State. Topics will include how to implement a safe patient handling program and the prevention of injuries through the use of equipment and devices. Training materials will include a student guide, slide presentations, problem-solving exercises, and factsheets.
Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Safety and Health	Philadelphia	PA	$105,096	Fall Protection in Construction
The grantee will provide training on fall protection, including ladders, scaffolds and roofs to small residential construction contractors and workers (including youth) in New Jersey. Training materials will include a PowerPoint presentation with instructors notes, student handouts for each topic, participatory exercises, and hands-on demonstration of equipment. Classes will be provided in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Pennsylvania State University	University Park	PA	$104,883	Hazard Communication
The grantee will provide training on the new Globally Harmonized System (GHS) under the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to workers and employers located in rural Pennsylvania. The learning objectives of this training include understanding the GHS hazard classification and labeling system and applying the hazard classification and labeling system within the HCS. An instructional kit will be prepared for this training in both English and Spanish.
University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus	San Juan	PR	$105,300	Multiple Topics
The grantee will provide training in ergonomic hazards and the Hazard Communication Standard to food service workers and supervisors in Puerto Rico. Training topics will include the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders, ergonomic hazard identification and control, hazardous substances, and exposure prevention. Training materials will include case studies and hazard identification checklists. Training will be provided in Spanish.
Associated General Contractors of America	Arlington	VA	$96,483	Fall Protection in Construction
The grantee will provide fall protection training to workers and small construction union and non-union contractors at six AGC chapter training centers across the United States. Training will use a combination of safety videos, fall protection equipment demonstrations, and PowerPoint presentations to train the target audience to recognize, avoid and prevent hazards relating to falls in construction. Training and materials will be available in English and Spanish.
Voces de la Frontera	Milwaukee	WI	$103,300	Ergonomic Hazards
The grantee will provide ergonomics training to hard-to-reach immigrant workers in southeast Wisconsin and Chicago. Training will cover best practices for preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), worksite and workstation reorganization for workers in the manufacturing, construction, and restaurant industries. Existing materials will be used but they will be translated from English into Hmong and Burmese.
Eastern Kentucky University	Richmond	KY	$49,854	Injury and Illness Prevention Programs
The grantee will develop and deliver Injury and Illness Prevention Program (I2P2) training material that targets small and new businesses. In-class and online training materials will include a Trainer's guide, Power Point presentations, and a Train-the-Trainer manual.
Wayne State University	Detroit	MI	$49,946	Hazard Communication
The grantee will develop three training modules on Hazard Communication targeting operating engineers. Module 1 will be an overview, summary and instructions module. Module 2 will cover the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), including the revisions on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Module 3 will be refresher training including the new label elements and safety data sheet (SDS) format.
Migrant Clinicians Network Inc.	Austin	TX	$50,000	Agricultural Safety including Grain Handling Operations
The grantee will develop four English-as-a-Second-Language training modules that address safety and health issues among immigrant Hispanic agricultural workers. These modules will pair agricultural safety and health content with relevant vocabulary and English language skills in a culturally and linguistically appropriate context. Training materials will include a bilingual Pictionary for agricultural workers and employers in English/Spanish.
