NORFOLK, Neb. -- The U.S. Postal Service-Norfolk Processing & Distribution Facility has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony will take place on Aug.17 at the facility.
"The U.S. Postal Service in Norfolk has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. "Their outstanding effort has included management commitment to safety and health and employee involvement in safety and health programs."
The facility employs 76 workers who receive, sort, and distribute U.S. and foreign mail for approximately 150 associate offices and stations.
OSHA's VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury rates that are 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. Approximately 1,500 work sites representing more than 280 industries nationwide participate in the program.
Information kits about the VPP application and approval process are available from the OSHA VPP manager at the agency's Kansas City regional office at (816) 426 5861.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
