Investigation Summary
An employee was working at a nursing care or skilled nursing facility. She was found at home dead. She had died from complications related to COVID-19. It was not known whether she had contracted the disease at work or within the greater community. Her employer did not consider fatality work-related. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) sent a letter to her employer. Following receipt of the response from the employer, a medical examiner (ME) was contacted to determine the COVID-19 status of the employee. On August 11, 2020, the medical examiner confirmed that the employee's death was caused by acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19. An OSHA inspection was opened August 12, 2020.
