Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burn injuries from a dust explosion due flame propagation through an unrestricted conveying system and other pieces of equipment in the building: a.) Particleboard Plant, Milling/Screening, Process Equipment & Conveyors - Approved means were not provided to prevent flame propagation through the conveying systems that deliver material to or from pulverizing and/or sizing operations. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with the requirements outlined in NFPA 664 ~ Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosion in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities. NFPA 664 Sections 10-3 & 11-3.1 states that when material presenting a dust explosion hazard is delivered to or from the pulverizing operation, chokes, rotary valves, explosion suppression systems, or other approved means shall be provided to prevent flame propagation through the conveying system. Devices utilized to prevent flame propagation should be installed in accordance with NFPA 69 ~ Standard on Explosion Prevention Systems and NFPA 68 ~ Guide for Venting of Deflagrations.ing,
