Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees exposed to heat stress while assembling concrete forms on the top level of a building under construction: a)Springhill College; Library Construction Project; Top level of Structure: A new employee was exposed to excessive heat on or about August 19, 2003 while assisting other employees in the building of concrete forms. The employee had not been given an acclimation period to allow him to adjust to the heat and the activity to be performed. Among others, one feasible method to abate this hazard would be to follow the recommendations for heat acclimatization as specified on the OSHA Heat Stress Card (OSHA Publication 3154) which states, "Build up tolerance to the heat and the work activity slowly. This usually takes about two weeks."
