Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to chemical burns of the eyes and skin from corrosive liquids without the provision of an eyewash station and/or emergency shower: At the establishment - In the following instances, when solutions containing formaldehyde and corrosive liquids are used, handled, or dispensed, the employer failed to provide a suitable facility for quick drenching of the eyes and body in case of an emergency. a)Plant #7 Egg Packing Room (1/31/96) - When employees were potentially exposed to splashes from bleach, the eyewash station present was not operating. b)Rendering Plant - (3/14/96) Employees potentially exposed to splashes from dispensing corrosives (boiler chemicals - Mogul EG-5323 and EG-5331) into open 5 gallon buckets and transporting them down steps and through two rooms, did not have access to a suitable facility for quick drenching of the eyes and body in case of an emergency. c)Breeder Barn #2 in Poland, ME. (1/29/96) - When employees were exposed to solutions containing greater than 0.1 percent formaldehyde, the employer failed to provide eyewash facilities for emergency use. Employees performed disinfecting of barn with diluted disinfectant containing 0.46 percent formaldehyde via power wash/sprayer. Employee applying disinfectant was not wearing eye protection. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable methods to reduce or eliminate employee exposure include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1)Installation of portable eyewash station within inside of Wash Crew and/or Cleaning Crew supply truck. 2)Installation of an emergency eyewash and shower within the Rendering Plant and move corrosives closer to location of use.
