Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 008 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns and smoke inhalation from fire due to the inadequacy of emergency exits as described in the following instances: a)Barn 86 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. b)Barn 85 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. c)Barn 84 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. d)Barn 83 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. e)Barn 82 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. f)Barn 81 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground. g)Complex 20, Barn 20 - There was no exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. h)Complex 20, Barn 22 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. i)Complex 20, Barn 24 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. j)Complex 20, Barn 25 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. k)Complex 20, Barn 27 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. l)Complex 20, Barn 28 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. m)Complex 20, Barn 29 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. There was no safe way to get from the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. p)Complex 30, Barn 31 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet.q)Complex 30, Barns 32, 33, 34 and 35 - There were no safe exits from the far end of the barns at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. r)Complex 30, Barn 36 - The door handle was broken on the door at the far end of the barn and there was no safe exit at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. s)Brooder Barn No. 6 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. t)Brooder Barn No. 5 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. u)Complex 40, Barn 44 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. Both doors could not be opened from the inside and there were no handles on the doors. v)Complex 40, Barn 45 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. w)Complex 40, Barn 46 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. There was no door handle on the door and the door could not be opened from the inside. x)Complex 40, Barn 47 - There was no safe exit at the far end of the barn at the chicken rack level to the ground which was 8 feet. Among other methods, one feasible and useful method of abatement would be to provide exits and exit signs at each end of each barn.
