The story of the Atkins Kroll, Inc. (AK) auto dealership in Guam began on the western shores of the United States, way back at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was in 1906 that G.H. Atkins and Clifton Kroll established Atkins, Kroll and Co., Ltd in San Francisco. Within a few years they were already looking to expand, and in 1914 they established a business in Guam. As the oldest corporation on Guam, AK served generations of individuals and families in Hagatna, Dededo, Yigo, the Naval Station and Anderson Air Force Base, and beyond. Today, AK provides full service to its customers, including body repair, painting, chassis straightening, car detailing, and full parts, service, repair, and maintenance for specific brands.

AK has been working with the Guam OSHA On-Site Consultation Program since 2019. During the first site visit, the consultants identified 32 serious hazards including slips, trips, and falls, lockout tagout, fire exits, fire routes, electrical issues, potential volatile organic compounds (VOC) exposure, machine guarding, hazard communication, and other hazards. AK corrected each hazard. The following year, On-Site Consultation conducted its second visit. During that visit, AK was developing a management communication system that workers could use to report hazardous conditions for correction. By the third Consultation visit, AK had implemented the use of an app that reports any workplace safety and health hazards, notifies the people in charge to abate the hazards, and provides reports when hazards are abated or there is a delay in abatement.

On September 20, 2022, AK was approved for Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) status. This is the Guam OSHA On-Site Consultation Program’s first SHARP approval. The approval is a major milestone for the program. Guam can now market SHARP, which is now an achievable endeavor for other small businesses. SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation Services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.

AK is proud of its achievement and committed to the work it entails to remain in the SHARP program. Companies interested in SHARP can contact their local OSHA On-Site Consultation program to discuss details and schedule an on-site safety and health evaluation.
