A & A Global Industries, Inc. is a family owned and operated business that opened in 1938. Starting as a humble coin operated stamp vending machine company, A & A Global Industries, Inc. has expanded to providing toys, novelties, plush, electronics, stationery, sporting goods, and lighting. In 2012, the company contacted Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH Consultation) for assistance as their management increased their focus on quality production and an improved safety culture. Company management reported that their biggest challenge was getting employees to buy into maintaining a safe workplace. They worked hard to get employees to understand that their input was paramount to maintaining a safe workplace.

At the company’s request, MOSH Consultation conducted an initial Consultation visit in 2012 and multiple follow up visits. Throughout this process, MOSH consultants assisted the company with identifying and correcting a significant number of hazards. Hazards identified included hazards associated with electrical equipment, machine guarding, lockout/tag out, and flammable liquids. In addition to correcting these hazards, the company took several steps to improve its workplace safety and health program. With input from MOSH consultants, the company was able to fine tune written safety programs, employee and management training programs, and safety committee hazard inspections.

The company’s safety and health program now incorporates each of the seven core elements of an effective Safety and Health Management System: hazard anticipation and detection, hazard prevention and control, planning and evaluation, administration and supervision, safety and health training, management leadership, and employee participation.

In recognition of their achievement, A & A Global Industries, Inc. earned their latest Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) status in 2019. SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation Program services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive an exemption from OSHA or the State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.

MOSH consultants helped A & A Global Industries, Inc. become self-sufficient in managing occupational safety and health. The company’s work with the consultation program from 2013 through 2019 resulted in a reduction of their both the Total Recordable Case (TRC) rate and their Days Away from Work, Job Restriction, or Transfer (DART) rate. Both the TRC and DART went from 4.4 per 100 employees in 2013 to 1.4 in 2018. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the national TRC average for the company’s NAICS code (332812, Metal Coating, Engraving and Allied Services to Manufacturers) in 2018 was 4.7, and the national average DART rate was 2.9. Improvements in the company’s safety and health program, including successful communication with employees, has kept their near misses to very rare occurrences. Since the beginning of 2020, the company has had zero accidents.
