Acres Cultivation, a subsidiary of Curaleaf Holdings, Inc., operates a cannabis cultivation site and processing laboratory in Amargosa Valley, Nevada. Acres is the first cannabis business in Nevada to earn recognition from the State of Nevada’s Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) and achieved Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) status in April 2022.

SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.

By partnering with SCATS, Acres enhanced programs and training to ensure the safety of its 50 employees who work at the 40-acre cannabis cultivation site in Amargosa Valley, Nevada. During a SHARP audit, SCATS consultants identified opportunities to improve the site’s lock out/tag out program, which protects employees working on electric circuits and equipment. Consultants also identified the need for ground fault circuit interrupter cover replacements, which the company addressed.

“Since working with SCATS’ safety consultants, we have improved our workplace safety,” said Hillary Benz, Operations Manager of Acres' cultivation site in Amargosa Valley. “But more importantly, we have built a bridge of trust with our staff members – they know we care about their well-being.”

Further highlighting Acres’ commitment to employee safety is the heat illness prevention measures put in place. The cultivation site’s location in Amargosa Valley is north of Las Vegas and just east of one of the hottest places on earth – Death Valley National Park. To provide a safer working environment during the summer months, the facility at Acres Cultivation features cooling devices at the front of the greenhouses which offer relief from the afternoon heat. Employees are also provided cooling towels and hats, electrolyte drinks, water, and extra breaks to help keep everyone hydrated, rested, and safe.
