Derby Fabricating Solutions (Derby) laminates and die cuts sound dampening components and interior/exterior components for the automotive industry. The company first learned about the OSHA On-Site Consultation Program from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation as a resource to maintain and improve facility safety. They contacted Ohio’s On-Site Consultation Program in 2017 to be proactive in complying with safety and health regulations and to ensure team members are working in the safest environment possible.

Hazards identified by the safety consultant from Ohio’s On-Site Consultation Program included machine guarding, trip hazards, chemical labeling, and deficiencies in safety programs. The company corrected those hazards and improved machine guarding overall. The team at Derby also became more safety conscious and proactive in preventing accidents. They became more involved in safety meetings and daily inspections of equipment so that all hazards could be corrected and eliminated before an injury could occur.

Derby became a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) participant in 2019 and received SHARP renewal in October of 2021. SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.

Derby Fabricating reduced their OSHA recordable injuries from five in 2016 to one per year from 2017 to 2020. They credit On-Site Consultation with this improvement. The company’s main goal was to reduce injuries and by doing so they also financially benefited from savings on workers’ compensation costs.

“Ohio’s (On-Site Consultation) SHARP team was able to help us achieve a higher level of safety by assisting with challenging us to go above and beyond the requirements of the OSHA standards, taking our programs another step up,” said Michael Brinkman, Derby’s plant manager. Companies interested in SHARP can contact their local OSHA On-Site Consultation program to discuss details and schedule an on-site safety and health evaluation.
