Harris Rebar Las Vegas team- They Work Safe!
Harris Rebar is a leading fabricator, installer, and distributor of concrete reinforcing steel and related products. Harris Rebar is owned by Nucor, North America’s largest producer of rebar and steel products. Harris Rebar has over 70 locations across the United States and Canada.
Harris Rebar in Las Vegas began working with the Nevada Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) on various construction jobs around the city. Harris Rebar’s fabrication shop had its initial Consultation visit in January 2013 and was awarded its first Safety and Health Recognition Program (SHARP) recognition in September 2013.
Harris Rebar in Las Vegas has received four SHARP renewals since 2013, with the latest in 2021. SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.
During the most recent SHARP audit, the SCATS consultants identified opportunities to improve noise sampling. The SCATS team came back the same week to assist with sampling and update sampling procedures. The team also recommended improvements to wire rope sling inspections. A few minor electrical hazards were identified and immediately corrected.
The company created a series of safety workshops (We Work Safe), which were designed to strengthen the company’s safety culture. We Work Safe also provides the tools to be safe at work and at home. The team continues to identify potential hazards, and is taking action to prevent hazardous situation from arising before they happen.
"As a result of our continued participation in SHARP, it has been more than two years since we have had a recordable injury and our near-miss reporting has become more consistent," said Ron Alvarado, Safety Coordinator at Harris Rebar. "Perhaps even more exciting are the programs and events our teams develop as they identify potential hazards and take action to prevent harm. It's so powerful to move the needle from reacting to unsafe situations or events, to proactively preventing them."
Companies interested in SHARP can contact their local OSHA On-Site Consultation program to discuss details and schedule an on-site safety and health evaluation. To locate the On-Site Consultation program nearest you, call 1-800-321-OSHA (6742) or visit www.osha.gov/consultation.
