JWM Neurology PC opened over 40 years ago and serves the Indianapolis and central Indiana areas. The physicians diagnose and treat adults and children with a variety of neurological conditions and offer services such as medical consultations, drug infusions, medical research, nervous system testing, and blood draws. The company determined its safety programs had been dormant and wanted to seek out direction and assistance. While attending the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Health & Safety Expo, it became aware of INSafe, Indiana’s On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program. JWM reached out to INSafe in August 2020.

Two INSafe consultants visited one of JWM’s locations to perform a full service consultation. The consultants identified opportunities for improvement in areas such as electrical, emergency response, and hazard communication. During the closing conference, the consultants spoke with management about the INSHARP program, Indiana’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).

In October 2020, JWM contacted INSafe and requested consideration for the INSHARP program for eleven of their sites in central Indiana. Consultation visits for those additional sites began in November 2020, and were completed in April 2021. All eleven locations have received initial recognition into INSHARP. The SHARP program acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or the State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for management of occupational safety and health among its business peers.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the national average total recordable injury and illness case (TRC) rate for 2019 was 1.6 and the national average days away, restricted time, and/or transfer (DART) rate was 0.4 in JWM’s industry. Eight of the JWM Neurology locations have not experienced any workplace illnesses or injuries during the last three years. Three locations were below the BLS averages for the industry. Among other positive impacts, low TRC and DART rates significantly reduce workers’ compensation insurance premiums and claims costs. The company also reports that the level of involvement in safety committees has increased since the Consultation program visits. Ellise Hayden, Chief Operations Officer for JWM Neurology commented, “They (INSafe) have been great guides for our development. We reach out to them when we are in need of assistance. They are receptive and supportive.”
