Oklahoma Department of Labor Video Highlights Companies That Have Used Oklahoma Consultation

Safety Saves

The Oklahoma Department of Labor’s On-Site Consultation Program has partnered with two Oklahoma companies to produce a video that promotes Consultation services and the Safety and Health Recognition Program (SHARP) to small businesses in the state.

One of the companies featured in the video, Cookshack, from Ponca City, Oklahoma has worked with Oklahoma On-Site Consultation for over 12 years and received its most recent SHARP certification renewal in 2021. The company manufactures smoker ovens. Its President Stuart Powell has said "Our workers' comp rate has actually dropped $40,000 a year since we started working with Oklahoma On-Site Consultation."

SHARP acknowledges small and medium-sized businesses that have used OSHA On-Site Consultation services and operate exemplary workplace safety and health programs. Small businesses that achieve SHARP status receive a deferral from OSHA or State Plan programmed inspections for the period that the SHARP designation is valid. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP is an achievement that identifies the employer as a model for occupational safety and health among its business peers.

The other company featured in the video, LD Kerns, from Jenks, Oklahoma has been in business for over 22 years. This construction company has worked with Oklahoma On-Site Consultation since 2017. The Consultation Program has been a key partner with LD Kerns in the company’s continuous desire to strive for safety and health excellence. The company values the safety and health expertise provided by Oklahoma On-Site Consultation and would recommend the program to other construction contractors.

The OSHA On-Site Consultation Program offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high hazard worksites. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to identify workplace hazards and how to fix them, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, train and educate workers, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs. On-Site Consultation services are separate from OSHA enforcement efforts.
