Background:

On October 26, 2007, OSHA Region II, Parsippany Area Office, Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., Skanska USA Building, Inc., Essex and Passaic Counties Building & Construction Trades Councils, New Jersey DOL Workforce Development On-site Consultation Service, developed an OSHA Strategic Partnership (OSP) during the façade replacement project in Nutley, NJ. The OSP was designed to reduce injury and illness rates and promote safety and health.

The replacement project completely removed the energy inefficient and aging glass curtain wall system from Hoffman-La Roche's fifteen story Building 76 and replaced it with an energy efficient unitized system on the corners and along the north and south sides of the building. The existing glass and façade was removed from to bottom and was re-installed from the bottom to the top.

Success Impact:

No Recordable Injuries or Fatalities

During the course of this project, which spanned from October 2007 to November 2008, no recordable injuries, illnesses or fatalities were experienced by the 188 workers who completed this project

The OSP's goals included developing and implementing effective safety and health systems, achieving recordable illness and injury rates below the national average for the construction industry NAICS code 236000 and addressing construction industry hazards such as falls, electrocutions, struck by and caught in between.
