Puerto Rico OSHA On-Site Consultation Program Rethinking Marketing Strategies: Getting Back to Business
The Puerto Rico (PR) OSHA On-Site Consultation Program has first-hand knowledge of the difficulties of getting back to business after hurricanes, earthquakes, and a pandemic. Promoting and getting employers to request services has proven a challenging endeavor. Faced with the reality of the differences among generations, PR OSHA On-site Consultation Program shifted its marketing strategies to attract employers and continue meeting the program's goal to protect the island's workforce. This marketing initiative impacted younger business owners as well as older ones.
First, PR OSHA adopted a door-to-door approach, targeting industrial sectors and the small businesses in different towns across the island. The initiative called "PR (Puerto Rico) OSHA Takes to the Streets" features On-Site Consultation and PR OSHA staff providing the employers with the PR OSHA poster, Occupational Safety and Health Act information, On-Site Consultation information, and other useful business information. During these stops, consultants have gathered employer information to follow up and talk further about the services they provide.
The program also entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the island's primary financial institution and have promoted Consultation services through the financial institution's websites. The article "Meet Puerto Rico OSHA and Comply as an Employer" is available in Spanish and English for all the bank's clients.
PR Consultation's efforts have created a more personable and receptive experience between employers and consultants. These marketing initiatives have reinforced PR OSHA's goal of promoting and prioritizing safety and health on the island. As a result, Consultation visit requests have increased.
The OSHA On-Site Consultation Program offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high hazard worksites. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to identify workplace hazards and how to fix them, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, train and educate workers, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs. On-Site Consultation services are separate from OSHA enforcement efforts.
