Nevada Consultation – Providing Assistance to Department of Motor Vehicles Employees and Customers During COVID-19
Nevada Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) provides on and off-site safety and health consultation services to both private and public employers in Nevada. In response to a request in August 2020, SCATS conducted consultation visits at 18 Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) locations in Nevada.
These 18 locations employ over 1,700 workers. Visits were conducted in August through September of 2020 and focused on the COVID-19 protocols that the DMV locations were developing and implementing in an effort to minimize exposures to COVID-19 and keep employees and patrons safe.
The consultant’s recommendations included:
- installing barriers at workstations,
- implementing proper social distancing throughout the facility,
- cleaning after each customer was assisted,
- ensuring that personal protection was provided for drive examiners,
- extending hours of operations, and
- creating easy to follow social distance guidelines for people outside.
Theses safety measures protected DMV employees and over 500,000 customers.
SCATS received positive feedback from DMV Director Julie Butler, who said: “We appreciate the level of effort it took for SCATS staff to visit all our facilities and found the recommendations productive as we continue to navigate our way through this pandemic.”
The OSHA On-Site Consultation Program offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to small and medium-sized businesses in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, with priority given to high hazard worksites. Consultants from state agencies or universities work with employers to identify workplace hazards and how to fix them, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, train and educate workers, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs. On-Site Consultation services are separate from OSHA enforcement efforts and do not result in penalties or citations.
