Occupational Safety and Health Administration, On-Site Consultation Program offers free, confidential safety and occupational health advice to small and medium-sized businesses in all states across the country, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. Small business owners and workers can also obtain excellent training through this program. For example, the South Dakota OSHA On-Site Consultation Program hosted a 4-hour training session at the 2017 Associated General Contractor's (AGC) Safety Summit Conference, held in Cedar Shores / Chamberlain, South Dakota. On June 1, 2017, Mr. Jon Puetz, Senior Health and Safety Consultant of South Dakota State University, Engineering Extension Program, and Ms. Shelia Stanley, Sioux Falls OSHA Area Office Director, presented on "Safety for Contractors and Small Businesses in South Dakota, OSHA's Silica Standard for Construction, OSHA's Respiratory Standard for Construction, what is new with OSHA in South Dakota, and OSHA Consultation Program free and confidential resources available to all South Dakota contractors." Mr. Puetz and Ms. Stanley shared examples of how the South Dakota OSHA Consultation Program provides the free and confidential assistance to South Dakota small employers on hazard abatement options for safety and health concerns found in their workplace. In addition to the training session, they staffed a resource / display table, answered employers' questions, provided resource materials to the conference attendees, and suggested abatement options. Approximately 100 AGC members attended the June 1 and 2 educational conference.

In addition to free training opportunities, OSHA provides numerous resources, designed specifically for small business employers, including safety and health tools and publications, easy-to-follow guides for specific OSHA standards, and descriptions of benefits that small businesses receive from OSHA. This assistance focuses on two programs for small businesses: OSHA's On-Site Consultation Program and Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).
