Roundtable Background
In 2004, OSHA recognized that a number of Alliance Program participants shared a common interest in construction-related topics and issues. As a result, the Agency formed the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable to provide participants with the opportunity to share construction-related information about Alliance-related activities and successes, network with others in the Program, and develop compliance assistance tools and resources.
Initially, Fall Protection and Design for Safety (DFS) Workgroups were established. The Workgroups met regularly and developed and disseminated construction-related compliance assistance tools and other resources to employers and workers. Over time, the Workgroups began to meet jointly and work on joint projects. At the November 19, 2009, Construction Roundtable meeting, the group agreed to discontinue the Fall Protection and DFS Workgroups to more broadly focus on safety and health issues and trends in the construction industry.
For information on the efforts of the Workgroups, please see the meeting notes.
Products Developed Through the Roundtable
- Proposed Strategies to More Effectively Reach Small Contractors in Residential Construction White Paper. Through the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, the participants developed a white paper focusing on proposed strategies on how the safety and health community can more effectively reach the small contractor in residential construction. (2016, September)
- New Construction Employee Safety Orientation Checklist. Through the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, the participants developed a checklist, which is intended to be used by construction employers as minimum guidelines to conduct a site safety and health orientation for all new employees, including temporary workers and subcontractor employees. (2016, September)
- Designing for Construction Safety Short Course (PPT). Through the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, the participants developed a Designing for Construction Safety Short Course that is intended to provide employers, contractors, owners, design/build firms, engineers, architects, and others with information on how to recognize and anticipate construction hazards, and how to eliminate those hazards with well thought out construction design features. The course, which includes an Instructor and Participant guide, looks at methods to identify and evaluate construction site hazards, as well as examines the hierarchy of controls to select the best design feature to either eliminate the hazard or reduce the risk of injury, particularly in the prevention of falls from height. (2016, March)

Through the Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, participants developed safety tips sheets for employers and workers focusing on the reduction of strains and sprains in the construction industry. (2011, February)
- "Change in Safety Culture at Pepper Construction Company Leads to Dramatic Decline In Injuries and Illnesses." Through the OSHA Alliance Program Construction Roundtable, participants developed a success story that highlights how a construction company's focus on workplace safety and health during its strategic planning initiative led to significant drops in workplace injuries and illnesses. (2010, July)
