Cytomegaloviruses are members of the herpesvirus family that infect primates, including humans. Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV), also known as Human Herpes Virus 5 (HHV-5), is the specific cytomegalovirus that infects humans. This species is often referred to as simply Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Humans are also the only known host of HCMV.1
German pathologist Hugo Ribbert first observed CMV in 1881.
